The Granite Bay - Roseville - location of Sourdough and Co. is the second location in the City of Roseville, and one of several dozen of stores located in California. The Granite Bay location is the newest store in Roseville and has quickly achieved a reputation as a go-to restaurant when you're in the mood for a fine sandwich. As with all restaurant reviews I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences. Photo: It's a little past the 10AM opening time, Saturday, June 29, 2024, and I've arrived at Sourdough and Company, located in the Granite Bay district of Roseville, CA, to enjoy an amazing lunch. The restaurant is located in the upscale Renaissance Center, and offers beautiful landscaping, plenty of parking, and is conveniently located to the one of the local bus routes. The restaurant shares it's sidewalk with neighbor Baskin Robbins and offers shaded outdoor dining, depending on the season. Photo: As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a friendly staff member, and you'll notice the menu on the wall, where you make your selection. The restaurant operates in what I call the "taqueria format" in that you make your selection from the menu, pay for it, choose the seat of your choice, and when your order is ready, a friendly staff member will bring it to you, with a smile. Like most casual restaurants in 2024, the majority orders seemed to be to-go. Me... I'm "old school," as I prefer to enjoy my meal in the dining room, or outside on a patio. Photo: After I placed my order, my hostess, Maria, got busy making my sandwich. I'm at the rear of the restaurant, looking towards the front door. The dining room is long, narrow, and sparsely furnished with a few tables. It's attractive, clean and inviting. Photo: The sandwich and soup menu are posted on the wall behind the kitchen and show the many options available for your custom-made sandwich. Photo: Maria cuts the bread for my sandwich and gets the roast beef going. Photo: Maria is putting the final touches on my sandwich, which included shredded iceberg lettuce. All veggies are cut up and placed in stainless steel trays for easy access by the talented staff. Your sandwich is made "your way," just the way you order it to be made. It was interesting to watch as after she sliced the bun open, she coated both sides with "House Sauce," than added meat, cheese, onion, tomato and finally lettuce. Photo: Meet Maria, my talented hostess/sandwich chef, who delivered my sandwich, and my "Bread Bowl" to me with a smile, less than 10 minutes after I placed my order. She remembered me from my previous visit last year... what it my camera, or was it my smile? Most likely it was my camera! Whatever the case, it was another "Five Star Review" on the social media platform, Yelp. Photo: I'm a happy guy, as I'm ready enjoy my amazing lunch of a "Clam Chowder Bread Bowl," with a "Roast Beef" sandwich for dessert. After the photo was taken, thanks to the beautiful 85-degree weather, I moved outside to enjoy my lunch on the sidewalk, since it was still shaded. Photo: A "Bread Bowl" of clam chowder, along with a "Roast Beef Sandwich," with everything, graced by a dill pickle spear made for an amazing lunch. Sourdough and Company is open every day of the week, in the Granite Bay area of Roseville. Photo: "Clam Chowder" soup is on the menu every day - it's one of my favorite soups - and it seemed to be the ideal soup for this late Friday morning. "Fire Roasted Vegetable," along with "Chili," were also available, but the clam chowder won out. When you order soup at Sourdough and Co., do yourself a favor, and go with the "Bread Bowl" as the freshly baked bread is simply divine. The bowl of bread started out with a roll about the size of a small head of cabbage, kind of squashed flat on the ends and not perfectly round like a ball. Like all the sourdough bread served at the restaurant, the bowl was freshly baked to a perfect golden brown and offered a satisfying "crunch" on the outside, yet was tender on the inside. All lovers of sourdough bread should take note, as this bread was simply delicious! The roll was hollowed out in the center to make a bowl for the soup, and the hollowed out portion was served on the side, along with a couple packages of butter. The soup was thick, rich with flavor and included lots of potatoes, clams and a touch of bacon. It was delicious, especially when enjoyed inside the inside the sourdough bread bowl. Soup is made in advance and heated in a large soup pot, which is works to made delicious soup! You don't have to leave Roseville and drive to the east coast to enjoy delicious "New England Clam Chowder," as you simply visit Sourdough and Company, and you'll enjoy a cup, bowl of a "Bread Bowl" of clam chowder as good as it gets... Photo: From the "Sandwiches" section of the menu, I went with an 8-inch "Roast Beef," with all everything on it. My choice of mustard was Dijon, and, for a change, I went with sliced Cheddar cheese. With the mustard, you choose between yellow or Dijon, and there are six varieties of cheese to choose from. All six cheeses are delicious, but on this Friday morning, Cheddar seemed to be my cheese of choice. As a wonderful addition, a slice of dill pickle was included on the side. The sandwich began with an 8-inch, amazingly delicious sourdough "Dutch Crunch" roll, freshly baked in the restaurant's kitchen. Sourdough bread is what the restaurant is famous for, and this roll didn't disappoint, as it was fresh, sweet and sour, and soft on the inside and crusty on the outside, complete with grill marks! The freshly baked rolls at Sourdough and Co. are simply amazing, and the rolls alone make a trip to the restaurant a worthwhile experience. Chilled "Roast Beef" was my choice of meat today, and my sandwich arrived with a generous helping of deli-style roast beef, which made the bread even better. The roast beef was your typical premium deli meat, which was thinly sliced and simply delicious. When it came to garnishes I requested everything, so I received their "House Spread" - similar to Thousand Island dressing - spread on both sides of the roll, lettuce, tomato and onion. As I mentioned earlier, my choice of mustard was Dijon and Cheddar was my choice of cheese. You can see the layers of meat, cheese, onion, tomato and lettuce, sandwiched in the "Dutch Crunch" roll. The sandwich tasted even better than it looks in the photo! The chilled Cheddar cheese blended perfectly with the "House Spread" to add a smooth, creamy touch to this delicious sandwich. My only regret, and I realized it after enjoying my sandwich is that I would have preferred horseradish sauce rather than "House Spread," as I'm simply a sucker when it comes to horseradish sauce. One bite into this sandwich and I was rewarded with a taste sensation! You first get a lot of "crunch" as you bite into the roll, thanks to the "Dutch Crunch" sourdough bread, and the deliciousness of the roast beef, the veggies and the sauce kick in. The sandwich had the perfect bread-to-meat ratio, and the spread, the cheese and the veggies combined to make this a delicious, and well-balanced sandwich. This sandwich is for Placer County "foodies!" Let's go back a year to 10AM on Thursday, June 15, 2023 and remember my first visit to this amazing restaurant! Photo: It's a little past the 10AM opening time on Thursday, June 15, 2023, and I've arrived at the second Roseville - Granite Bay area - location of Sourdough and Co. to enjoy an early lunch. The restaurant is open from 10AM to 8PM every day of the week and serves delicious sandwiches, soup and salad. Sourdough and Co. is a small chain of several dozen restaurants located in mostly Central and Northern California, with company headquarters located in El Dorado Hills, in the Sierra Nevada foothills east of Sacramento. The chain seems to be expanding, as their web site lists many restaurants on the "coming soon" list. Besides the Granite Bay location, there is another Roseville Sourdough and Co., located on Foothills Blvd. The restaurant is located in the upscale Renaissance Creek shopping center, in the Granite Bay area of Roseville, CA, with the shopping center being anchored by the large and quite new Safeway grocery store. Photo: As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the order counter, and the menu on the wall that lists the sandwiches, soup and salads the restaurant offers. The dining room is quite large, clean and very modern. The faux brick walls and the faux wood floor lend an "earthy" tone to the dining room, which add to the pleasant atmosphere. The dining room is sparsely furnished with only a few tables, as I assume the bulk of the orders are to-go, as many contemporary diners seem to prefer. Photo: The dining room is long, narrow but quite spacious, and the many windows add natural and attractive lighting. Wall decor is sparse, as there are only a few pictures and photos on the wall. Since I arrived at opening time, I had the dining room to myself for awhile, but the phone and the Internet seemed to be quite busy with to-go orders. Photo: The main sandwich menu is placed on the wall behind the order counter and offers sandwiches, with all of the options. Sourdough and Co. operates on what I call the "taqueria format," in that you make your selection from the menu, pay for it, and in return, you receive a receipt with your name on it, and you seat yourself at any open table. When your order is ready, one of the friendly staff will bring it to your table, with a smile. Printed take-out menus are offered at the counter, and the restaurant's web site lists the menu. On the web site, and on the printed menu, no prices are listed, as prices vary slightly depending on the location of the restaurant. Photo: Clam Chowder if offered every day of the week, but other choices make the "Soup of the Day," as the selections change daily. There are always three or four different soups available. Soup is pre-made and heated in a soup warmer. Photo: After I placed my order, Ada, the talented sandwich chef got busy making my order, while Maria started making up the bowl of soup and cutting the bread bowl. Like most sandwich restaurants, Sourdough and Co. uses a counter, where all components are placed in stainless steel trays, which make it easy for the staff to select and use to make your order complete. The sandwich part of the kitchen is open, and you can watch the talented staff make your sandwich. The bakery and soup part of the operation are tucked away in the kitchen, and aren't visible from the dining room. Photo: The restaurant features attractive outdoor dining, on the sidewalk in front, which it shares with next door neighbor Baskin Robbins. Photo: There is a small galvanized tub of Sourdough and Co.'s baguettes for sale, ready to take home and bake. Photo: Meet Maria, the friendly soup chef, who put together my bowl of soup along with the bowl of bread, and brought it to my table with a smile. Photo: Meet friendly Ada, an expert sandwich chef, who not only put together my delicious sandwich but brought it to me with a smile. My sandwich arrived perfectly prepared, and exactly as I had ordered it. Ada is simply amazing in every way, as she's talented, friendly and efficient. You want a great sandwich? ... Ada is your chef. Photo: Soup and a sandwich for lunch... what could be better? I smile, as friendly Ada takes my photo, as per my request. Soup and sandwiches are delicious at Sourdough and Co., located in Granite Bay. Photo: From the "Sandwiches" section of the menu I went with an 8-inch "Pastrami" and "Bread Bowl" of Cream of Potato soup, which was one of today's "Soup of the Day." Such a delicious and filling meal! I ate the entire bread bowl of soup, but I ended up taking half the sandwich home with me for dinner. Photo: Cream of Potato soup was on the menu today, and I enjoyed this fine soup in a "Bread Bowl" of freshly baked sourdough bread, along with a small roll on the side. Clam Chowder soup is on the menu every day - it's one of my favorite soups - but since it was Thursday, Cream of Potato seemed to be an ideal choice of soup. When you order soup at Sourdough and Co., do yourself a favor, and go with the "Bread Bowl" as the freshly baked bread is simply divine. The bowl of bread started out with a roll about the size of a head of cabbage, kind of squashed flat on the ends and not perfectly round like a ball. Like all the sourdough bread served at the restaurant, the bowl was freshly baked to a perfect golden brown and offered a little "crunch" on the outside, yet was tender on the inside. The roll was hollowed out in the center to make a bowl for the soup, and the hollowed out portion was served on the side, along with a couple packages of butter. The soup was thick, rich with flavor and included lots of potatoes. It was delicious, but not particularly noteworthy by itself, but inside the sourdough bowl, combined with the amazing sourdough bread, it was simply delicious! The menu states soup is made in advance and heated in a soup warmer, which is alright by me, as the soup is great! Photo: From the "Sandwiches" section of the menu, I went with an 8-inch "Pastrami," with all everything on it. My choice of mustard was Dijon, and I chose pepperjack for my cheese. With the mustard, you choose between yellow or Dijon, and there are six varieties of cheese to choose from. All six cheeses are delicious, but today, pepperjack cheese won out. The sandwich began with an 8-inch, amazingly delicious sourdough roll, freshly baked in the restaurant's kitchen. Sourdough bread is what the restaurant is famous for, and this roll didn't disappoint, as it was fresh, sweet and sour, and soft on the inside and crusty on the outside, complete with grill marks! The freshly baked rolls at Sourdough and Co. are simply amazing, and the rolls alone make a trip to the restaurant a "foodie" experience. Pastrami was my choice of meat today, and my sandwich arrived with a generous helping of thinly-sliced pastrami, which made the bread even better. The pastrami was your typical premium deli meat, delicious but not particularly noteworthy. When it came to garnishes I requested everything, so I received their "House Spread" - similar to Thousand Island dressing - spread on both sides of the roll, lettuce, tomato and onion. As I mentioned earlier, my choice of mustard was Dijon and pepperjack was my choice of cheese. The pepperjack cheese was perfectly melted and contrasted perfectly with the "House Spread" to add smoothly goodness to this amazing sandwich. One bite into this sandwich and I was rewarded with a taste sensation! You first get a little "crunch" as you bite into the roll, and then you're rewarded with the amazing sourdough roll, the pastrami and everything else. The sandwich had the perfect bread-to-meat ratio, and the spread, the cheese and the veggies combined to make this a delicious, and well-balanced sandwich. This sandwich was as good as it gets! Sandwiches, soups and salads... you'll find it all at Sourdough and Co., and you'll love the state-of-the-sandwich cuisine, and enjoy the fast, friendly service of the sandwich chefs.
