It's not difficult to find a motel in San Felipe, as the choice seems almost unlimited, as there are motels that seemingly cater to every taste. After all, a gigantic portion of the economy of the town depends upon tourism, and tourists need a place to say, and not every visitor has a motorhome, or wants to sleep in a tent, on the beach. But after doing a bit of checking around the town, and determining my priorities, a clear choice emerged: Hotel El Capitan. Photo: Located on Ave. Mar de Cortez, Hotel El Capitan is within walking distance of everything that San Felipe has to offer. Why do I prefer to say at Hotel El Capitan? Here is a list of things that are important to me in a San Felipe Hotel: * Price: I only sleep in the hotel, so I don't need anything fancy Other amenities that are nice to have include a clean swimming pool, a place to relax outside, such as a patio or a garden, 24/7 desk service, and quiet rooms. Happily, I can tell you that Hotel El Capitan meets or exceeds all of the necessities and all of the nice-to-have amenities. Photo: El Capitan's attractive courtyard offers plenty of secure parking. The hotel office and restaurant are at the extreme left of the photo, the pool is just beyond, and my white Ford truck is parked in front of my room. Photo: My room at Hotel El Capitan was clean, comfortable, but rather unpretentious. It was also quiet, and within walking distance of everything. Hotel El Capitan is located at the corner of Av. Mar De Cortes Sur, and Calle Manzanillo, just a few blocks south of the center of downtown San Felipe, and only 1/2 block from the southern end of the malecón, and the beach. Its a two-story motel, with a secluded from the street courtyard, that offers ample, secure parking. Every time that I've stayed at El Capitan, I've requested a downstairs room, and I've been able to park right in front of my motel room. Amenities include a sparkling clear pool, and an attractive patio, that has lots of chairs that invite relaxation, and a classy restaurant, which is located above the office. The office is staffed from early morning until late at night, and the clerks seem to be very helpful and friendly, although few of them speak English. As for me, that's not a problem, as I have a pretty good grasp of the Spanish language. Photo: Hotel El Capitan features a sparkling, clear pool, that offers relaxation and a refreshing swim. El Capitan is probably rated about a four star hotel, by Mexican standards, but despite the great location and the amenities, they don't gouge their guests, as a clean, comfortable, air conditioned room with a double bed goes for about MEX $450.00 per night, (the price during my last visit, in October, 2008) which is a bargain, considering what you get for your pesos. Photo: Looking east toward the restaurant, with the hot tub and the pool in the foreground. It's 9:00 o'clock on Thursday evening, October 2, 2008. The rooms aren't fancy, but they're clean, comfortable, and reasonably quite. Besides the bed, room furnishings consist of a small table and two chairs - that's it! At the end of the room, next to the door to the bathroom, there's a cabinet with drawers for storage, a alcove on top for the television, and the sink is in the middle. The much-touted TV receives 8 channels, and I didn't see either HBO or Showtime, not that I cared, as there is little, if anything ,on TV that I care to watch. The bathroom was clean, everything worked and the water in the shower was hot, so that made me happy. The tile floor was clean, and the bedspread was new, and not shabby. The bed was comfortable, and afforded a good night's sleep. Photo: Looking north on Ave. Mar de Cortez from Hotel El Capitan's balcony, with El Macharro, the "Diamond Head" of San Felipe, in the background of the photo. Hotel El Capitan isn't fancy, but its clean, comfortable and convenient to everything that San Felipe has to offer. It's safe, offers ample parking, and it's a real bargain. Add it all together, you get an outstanding value, and a big bang for your peso. When you're visiting San Felipe, a stay at Hotel El Capitan is highly recommended.
