When you think of San Felipe, Baja California, you naturally think of fish tacos... but sometimes, you have a craving for something a bit different, like a hamburger.  If you crave hamburgers, hot dogs or papas fritas, head over to the small restaurant known as Aury, located at the north end of Av. Malecon.

Photo:  Aury operates out of a small cart, parked at the north end of Av. Malecon.  Gloria, who operates the restaurant, told me they're open six days a week, and she usually sets up shop in mid-afternoon and stays open until the food runs out.  That is a very common practice among small food vendors in Mexico.

Photo:  Gloria cooks my meat and condiments, and toasts the buns on the propane-fired griddle.  Gloria was very friendly and talkative, but she asked me the de facto standard question, "Why are you taking photos?"  So I explained to her my mission, and what I do, and she thanked my, in advance, for giving her restaurant a bit of free publicity.  No problema, Gloria!

Photo:  Thanks, Gloria, for taking my photo!  Aury is a small restaurant, operated out of a trailer, that is parked on the sidewalk on Av. Malecon, facing the Malecon and the Sea of Cortez.  On this early Thursday evening, September 13, 2012, I'm ready to enjoy my custom-made hamburguesa, con todo, and a Mexican-bottled Coke.  Aury is a very small, one-woman operation, and her menu features hamburgers, hot dogs and fried potatoes.  In the words of the great Mel Blanc, "That's all, folks..."

Photo:  Since Aury is located on the sidewalk, they can't serve beer, as Mexico has very strict laws concerning the sale of alcohol on the street, so to quench my thirst, I ordered a Mexican Coke, which is my all-time favorite soft drink.  I ordered my hamburger with all, so it started with a 1/3 pound patty, a slab of "mystery" lunch meat - who cares? - and peppers, all cooked on the griddle.  The buns were toasted on the griddle, as per the custom in Mexico. Garnishes included tomato, lettuce and onion.  The burger was dressed with mustard and mayonnaise.  In Mexico, hamburguesas always include a slice or two of grilled lunch meat, in addition the burger patty.  A Mexican oddity:  Cheese is rarely found, or offered with burger, grilled on the street.  The price of this meal, including the Coke came to MEX $35.00, which is just about $3.00 in U.S. dollars... you can't beat the price or the quality, and you get to chat with the friendly cook while she creates your burger!

Photo:  This enthusiastic crowd of diners gives Aury a HIGH FIVE! and cheers my digital photo exploits.

No doubt about it, as Aury serves a great hamburger at a reasonable price.  The staff is friendly, the burger is great, the scenery is gorgeous, and the price is right.  Aury, for a great burger!
