The Navajo Nation is as close to a sovereign nation, located deep inside the United States of America, as a separate within the U.S. can get, and the Navajo Nation has it's own customs, and a particular brand of cuisine: Navajo cuisine combines the best of Mexican, Native American - specifically Navajo - and New Mexico-style "Mexican food..."  into one, and provides a delicious array of choices.  In Holbrook, you can enjoy this fine fusion at El Rancho Motel and Restaurant, on Navajo Blvd, not far off Interstate 40.

Photo:  El Rancho Restaurant is actually owned, operated, and part of the motel of the same name.  It's located on Navajo Blvd., which is the main street in Holbrook.  It's early Thursday evening, May 1, 2014.

Photo: To enter the restaurant, you enter the lobby of the motel, and conveniently walk through the souvenir shop. I'm very adept at passing through souvenir shops without stopping to purchase something.

Photo: The dining room is quite spacious, but it is a bit "divided," so it was difficult to get a photo of the entire room. It's clean and comfortable, and there were only a few customers on this early Thursday evening.

Photo:  After being presented with a basket of chips, and a bottle of salsa, to pour into a bowl, I ordered a Pacifico beer, which just happens to be my favorite beer.  I must admit this is the first time that I've ever been served salsa in a small, open bottle, to pour into a bowl for dipping, but it's a really nice concept.  The salsa was delicious, fresh, tasty, and not too spicy, just the way I like it.

Photo:  My friendly server, Alicia, brings my order of "Stuff Sopa" to my table.  I'll tell you more about it in the close photo of my meal.

Photo:  Thanks, Alicia, for snapping my photo, with my wonderful dinner in front of me.

Photo:  My plate of "Stuff Sopa," which is a local, Navajo favorite.  The menu describes Stuff Sopa as, "Seasoned ground beef, stuffed in a sopapilla, with refried beans, crisp, fresh lettuce, diced tomatoes and onions, smothered with red or green chili, and topped with Cheddar cheese.  Alicia asked me if I preferred red or green chili, and I asked her which was hotter, and she said red, so I went with red.  It was hot, but "do-able," and I enjoyed this dish immensely.  Absolutely delicious!!!

Mexican and American favorites, along with local Navajo and New Mexico-style cuisine, El Rancho Motel and Restaurant has it all.  Good food, great prices, comfortable dining, and friendly service, and it's located in the heart of beautiful Holbrook, Arizona.
