Talk about location, location and more location... Astro Budget Motel is located on East Main Street about a half mile east of downtown Barstow, right across the street from Von's, the major grocery store in town. Restaurants, night clubs, liquor stores, even the railroad tracks are within walking distance of the Astro Motel; every restaurant that I reviewed I was able to walk to from the motel. Photo: On Monday afternoon, December 27, 2010, Astro Budget Motel wasn't anywhere near full. Look at the blue skies, but the next night it rained all night, and Highway 58, over Tehachapai Pass, was closed for several hours due to snow. For $40.00 a night, you get a large room, close to everything, a small refrigerator, a microwave oven, and super-fast Internet access. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, although a bit dated, as room 108, where I stayed for three nights, probably hadn't been updated since the 1980's. This place is a bargain, and the guy who runs it is very friendly, and seems eager to please. Photo: A panoramic shot of room 108, complete with my laptop computer already set up, and in inviting bottle of tequila to warm the cool night. I tend to avoid national motel chains, and I stay off the freeway, as I like to save a few dollars and visit a place that offers true character. Astro Budget Motel is "the" place to stay when you're visiting Barstow, CA! Astro
