Sourdough Bread Company is a chain of four sandwich shops, with two locations in Placer County and two shops in El Dorado County, in the foothill area of the greater Sacramento area. The restaurants offer sandwiches, soups and salads, all served with their crunchy, in-house baked sourdough bread. On this Tuesday morning, I had the pleasure to visit the newest member of the "Sourdough" chain, "Roseville #2," located in the Campus Oaks shopping center, in Roseville, CA. As with all restaurant reviews I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences. Photo: Sourdough Bread Company - a.k.a. "Roseville #2" - is located in the fairly new Campus Oaks shopping center in west Roseville, CA. There are a total of four restaurants in the small chain, all located in the greater Sacramento area, and there are two stores that will soon be opening in Redding, 160 miles to the north. It's five minutes past the 10 o'clock morning opening time on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 and I've arrived to enjoy lunch for the first time. This fine restaurant opened in September, and although it's only a mile from my place, it took me this long to getting around to pay a visit. There are a couple of tables on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant, which would make for pleasant dining during warm weather, but on the foggy, 42-degree morning, outdoor dining wasn't an option for me. Photo: As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the order counter and the overhead menu, along with the "Disneyland style" markers that channel you into where you place and pick up your order. At the counter there is case with large, freshly baked cookies, along with bags of snacks, and a basked of freshly-baked sourdough loaves for sale. Today is five days before Christmas, and the restaurant is decorated for the holiday, including a Christmas tree. Photo: The dining room is open and quite spacious, with the furniture being tables for four. The word SOURDOUGH is on the faux brick wall and lighted up to set the mood. At the rear of the restaurant, there are black and white photos of bakers and chefs from "back in the day," with the emphasis on baking sourdough bread. Photo: The sandwich making station is open, just behind the order counter, where you can watch the talented staff prepare your sandwich. The kitchen is to the rear of the restaurant, but it isn't in view. Sourdough Sandwich Company places all of the condiments, veggies and meat in stainless steel trays and assembles the sandwiches as you watch. Photo: The menu is placed at the "head or the line," which is where you place your order. The complete menu is listed at the counter, and is also posted on the restaurant's website, and there are small paper versions that you can take home with you, when you decide to do takeout on a future date. The photo of the menu is difficult to read, so click on the image and it will take you to the restaurant's complete menu. The restaurant operates on what I refer to as the "taqueria format," where you make your selection from the overhead menu, pay for it, and you're given a receipt with your name or a number. When your order is ready, a friendly staff member will call your name or number, and you'll pick up your order at the pick up station. I was the first customer of the day, so they simply called my name, as I'd introduced myself. My order was ready in less than five minutes. Photo: After I placed my order, I watched the talented staff prepare my order. Note the stainless steel bins with meat and vegetables and squeeze bottles of condiments. Photo: I'm in the rear of the dining room, looking to the front where you can see the tables on the sidewalk, in front of the restaurant, should you care to enjoy outside dining. The large building to visible through the window is Nugget Supermarket, which anchors the shopping center and provides full-service grocery shopping. Photo: Meet Nina, my friendly hostess, who made my sandwich, and presented it to me with a cheery smile. Photo: I'm a happy guy, as I hold one half of my "Roast Beef" sandwich, along with a slice of freshly baked bread. The soup cup was styrafoam and the utensils were plastic, but who cares? Sourdough Bread Company is fine dining anyway you look at it. Photo: My order of a "Roast Beef" sandwich, along with a cup of "New England Clam Chowder," and a couple slices of sourdough bread, freshly baked in the restaurant's kitchen." "Roast Beef" sandwich was at the top of the "Sandwich Menu," and when I visit a restaurant for the first time, us usually order from "the top." My amazing lunch included a slice of dill pickle, which added a crunchy, nice touch. Photo: From the "Sandwiches" section of the menu, I went with "#1" on the menu, which is "Roast Beef." I was going "small" for lunch today, so I ordered the small, four-inch sandwich, and simply a cup of "New England Clam Chowder" as a delicious side. Nina asked me what I wanted on my sandwich, and I looked up at the menu board, and I replied "everything." The sandwich began with a small roll of some of the best sourdough bread on the planet, freshly baked in the restaurant's kitchen. The crust was golden brown and crunchy, and the inside was perfectly baked, moist, tender, and offered the perfect mix of sweet and sour that premium sourdough bread is noted for. Naturally the roll was warm, which was perfect for this chilly, foggy day in late December. My sandwich included an ample portion - probably around three ounces - of juicy, tender, thinly-sliced roast beef, cooked to perfection. "Everything" on my sandwich, besides the beef and bread included house spread, shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, diced onion, mustard and my choice of cheese from the menu, which was pepper jack. As a bonus, a slice of dill pickle made for a nice treat. You "bite" into this amazing sandwich begins with the "crunch" from the crust of the freshly baked sourdough bread, and the taste of the meat and "everything" kicks in to make for a truly amazing sandwich. Nothing stood out except for the meat and the bread, but it all blended together to form a taste sensation. The meat-to-bread ratio was spot-on, and the "everything" enhanced the sandwich. This was a truly delicious sandwich! It is interesting note that this fine sandwich costs about twice as much as what you'd enjoy at the giant, national chain, that seems to have stores in every shopping center. But, at Sourdough Bread Company, we're talking about a quality sandwich, and to me, it's well-worth the extra dough, pun intended. Photo: My cup of "New England Clam Chowder" along a couple slices of freshly baked sourdough bread, hot and fresh from the kitchen. A "cup" of soup is only eight ounces, but it made a perfect side to my "Roast Beef Sandwich." The soup was rich, creamy and was just the right consistency. There were lots of pieces of diced clam and potato in the soup, which made for a delicious, hearty side dish. Great clam chowder! I've already raved about the delicious baked sourdough bread the restaurant bakes, and I cut one slice into quarters, placed it on my spoon, and spooned clam chowder over it. Delicious! The bread was so stand-alone delicious that I simple devoured the other piece. Photo: Sourdough Bread Company is an amazing sandwich shop, and the restaurant looks pretty at night! Come for the delicious sandwiches, but stay for the fresh, crunchy, sourdough bread, which is baked daily in their kitchen. The sandwiches are delicious, but the bread is simply "to die for." Sourdough Bread Company, located in Roseville, CA, has something on the menu for every taste, and will put a smile on the face of those who enjoy fresh-baked sourdough bread.
