Maneki Sushi By Bay Boys Brewing opened their doors a few months ago and since their opening, they have taken the Roseville, CA area by storm, as they have already carved out a reputation for service delicious sushi and Japanese cuisine, in a spacious, sports-bar-like atmosphere. Oh... the staff is super friendly! As with all restaurant reviews I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences. Photo: It's just past the 11 o'clock in the morning opening time on Friday, January 06, 2023, and I've arrived at Maneki Sushi Bay Boys Brewing, located in Roseville, CA. to enjoy a fine lunch of Japanese cuisine. I LOVE the cuisine of Japan! I'm not sure the relationship between Maneki Sushi and Bay Boys Brewing, of Tracy, CA, but they seem to be related. I should have asked my host... If this location looks familiar, you may recall it used to be Islands Restaurant, which closed their door last year. Photo: As I walked into the restaurant, I was greeted by friendly Mercy, the greeter/seater, who seated me at the sushi bar. Photo: The centerpiece of the dining room is the bar, where drinks are served and the sushi rolls are prepared. I was amazed at the colorful hi-def television monitors that showed ever-changing scenic shots. The dining room is open, clean, comfortable and exhibits a "sports bar" like atmosphere. My only complaint - and it is a small one - was the music, which was too loud for my taste and made it a little hard for me to chat with my server. Photo: I was seated at the sushi bar, where I was treated to watching the talented chefs make sushi. This friendly gentleman was happy to give me a smile, as I watched him make a sushi roll. Photo: From my seat at the sushi bar, I was able to watch the talented staff in action, which is always a treat when you dine at a fine sushi restaurant. Photo: The appetizer section of the menu features all of your Japanese favorites. In my case, it was like... "Where to start?" but I settled on "Mixed Tempura," as it is one of my favorite dishes on any Japanese menu. Photo: "Miso Soup" is listed on the menu, and is a "must-order" for any Japanese meal. Photo: I started out my lunch with a large Asahi beer, served in a frosted glass. Photo: The kitchen isn't "open," per se... but if you duck behind a booth, you can get a peek into the kitchen and watch the talented staff at work. Photo: As I was sipping my beer and waiting for my order of "Miso Soup" to arrive, I enjoyed watching the talented sushi chefs in action. Photo: You like tuna? Lots of tuna is at the sushi counter, on display, which made for amazing viewing. I noted the staff carved into the fish on display for orders, but the display was refrigerated and made for an attractive diversion as I waited for my meal to arrive. Photo: My super friendly server, Roger, brings my bowl of "Miso Soup" to me with a smile. You can see the hot steam coming off the bowl of delicious "Miso Soup." What could be better in life? Photo: My order of "Miso Soup," along with a complimentary order of Green "Wasabi" horseradish paste and noodles - thank you Maneki Sushi - on the side. You simply can't enjoy a fine Japanese meal without a bowl of "Miso Soup!" My bowl of "Miso Soup" arrived steaming hot from the kitchen, which is the perfect start to any meal. I'm thinking the base of the soup was chicken broth, and the soup had sesame seeds and little chunks of cut up edible seaweed, in the true fashion of Japan. The broth was rich, flavorful and delicious, and the soup had lots of small cubes of tofu, cut into chunks, which added to the aroma, and the rich flavor of the soup. The "Miso Soup" served at Maneki Sushi was simply delicious! Such an amazing "must-side-dish" for any Japanese meal... The Green "Wasabi" horseradish paste was something else, as I went "head on" and spooned a chunk of it onto a noodle and popped it into my mouth. Can I say hot and spicy??? The horseradish went completely up my nose and left me drooling... but drooling with taste and pleasure. I didn't even taste the noodle, as the "Wasabi Paste" was very strong, and I got through it with the help of the Asahi beer, and ice water. The horseradish and "Wasabi" paste is part of the deal, and it made the meal even better. Photo: Meet my amazingly friendly server, Roger M., who brought my order of "Mixed Tempura" to me with a smile. He sensed I like beer, most like due to the large Asahi beer I ordered, and he later brought me a complimentary sample of Bay Boys Brewing beer, which proved to be a great beer. Thanks! There is nothing that I appreciate more than friendly service. Photo: Cheers! I toast my server, Roger M, along with Maneki Sushi, as I prepare to enjoy my amazing lunch of "Mixed Tempura," a Asahi beer, "Miso Soup," along with a complimentary dish of "Green Wasabi Paste" and noodles. Photo: From the "Appetizer" section of the menu, along with the "Soup" section, I went with "Mixed Tempura" and "Miso" soup, which is a "must-have" at any Japanese restaurant. Green "Wasabi" horseradish paste and noodles were provided on the side as a compliment... Thank you Maneki Sushi! Not shown in the photo... my friendly host brought a complimentary sample of Bay Boys Brewing IPA... great beer! My lunch of "Mixed Tempura" was simply delicious, and deep fried to perfection. Since I ordered "mixed tempura," which is my preference, I received three large shrimp, a slice of red bell pepper, a carrot slice, and - SURPRISE! - a slice of tempura potato, which was a new "thing for me." Tempura starts out with the batter, which at Maneki Sushi was light, crispy and simply delicious. The batter was applied "just right" to compliment the amazing taste of the veggies and the shrimp, and made for a perfect lunch. Alright... this could be considered a "light lunch" but was just right for me, on this late Friday morning. And Maneki's "Tempura Dipping Sauce," which was included with the "Mixed Tempura" lunch made for a lunch and a dipping sensation. The sauce, by itself, could be a "presentation" for any meal, as it was simply AMAZING! Sure... it was mostly soy sauce, but something... and I'm saying SOMETHING that Maneki Sushi did to this dipping sauce made it delicious, and some of the best tempura dipping sauce that I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy. As a thanks and a complement to Maneki Sushi, the "Mixed Tempura" was listed on the menu for $13.00 but they gave me the "Happy Hour" price of $11.00, which I appreciated. Thanks! "Mixed Tempura," with "Miso Soup," along with a batch of "Wasabi" and an Asahi beer at Maneki Sushi... life doesn't get any better! Photo: My main course of "Mixed Tempura," along with Maneki Sushi's outstanding dipping sauce made for a lunch on the Japanese side of things to remember, in Roseville, CA... The service I enjoyed at Maneki Sushi was simply unmatched for quality, courtesy and friendliness, and the food, albeit a little on the "pricey" side of the coin was simply delicious... "Pricey" aside, combine the delicious food, the quality of the food, the fun and friendly atmosphere, along with super friendly and efficient service... when it comes to contemporary Japanese cuisine...
