Delta King is a 285-foot-long paddlewheel steamboat, which used to travel the Sacramento River, to San Francisco, on 10-hour trips. Delta King is the sister ship to Delta Queen, both christened in May, 1927, and operated in revenue service until the early 1940's. Today, the ship is permantly docked at Old Sacramento and serves as a full-service hotel, and, more importantly, includes the Pilothouse Restaurant. Photo: Delta King is permanently moored to a pier at Old Sacramento. Yes, that's the Sacramento River, the largest river in California, with the city of West Sacramento, and the famous River Walk, located on the west bank of the river. Photo: On this gorgeous fall afternoon, Saturday, September 28, 2013, we chose to dine outside, on deck, to savor the fresh air, and enjoy a great view of the Sacramento River, and the busy river traffic. That's the "I Street" railroad/auto bridge in the background. During our lunch, we were treated to watching a couple of Union Pacific Railroad freight trains negotiate the bridge. As I railfan, I really enjoyed that sight! Photo: Our friendly server, Carmella, poses with my burger that I ordered for lunch today. Photo: Sharlene and I make a happy couple as we pose for the camera with our delicious lunch, aboard the Delta King. Photo: Sharlene ordered an appetiser for lunch; today's choice turned out to be a spinach dip, with "puffy" chips. As with every meal aboard the Delta King, this appetiser was delicious! Photo: I am an absolute sucker for a good burger, and Pilothouse Restaurant serves a delicious burger. The menu describes it as an "American Kobe Burger, with Tillamook cheddar, lettuce, red onion, tomato on a brioche bun, with hand cut fries." The burger arrived open-faced for presentation, and it was so good, that I didn't feel the need to add any condiments, such as mustard or mayonnaise. I ordered my burger "medium," and that's exactly what it was... Look at the melting cheese. Delicious burger! The fries were big, fried to a golden brown on the outside, chewy on the inside, just the way I like them. They weren't greasy, nor were they drenched in salt, as many places serve their fries. This was a delicious lunch, but for $12.00, it had better be good! Pilothouse Restaurant serves a delicious burger, but is definitely on the "pricey" side, but where else in Sacramento can you enjoy a delicious burger, aboard a historic paddlewheel steamer, outside, on the deck, with a breathtaking view of the Sacramento River, and all of it's activity? If you're looking for a great burger, and a great way to spend a pleasant early fall afternoon, Delta King Pilothouse Restaurant can't be beat! Delta
