The California Club, located in historic old town Auburn, CA, describes themselves as "the ultimate bar experience." That's a BIG statememt to publish, but after an afternoon or morning at the "Cal Club," - affectionaltly nicknamed by Auburn locals - I think you'll argree that it's an amazing bar. They've been doing something right, as they're alive and well since they opened their doors nearly a century ago, back in 1929. As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant or bar I've reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat and drink, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining and drinking experiences. Photo: The California Club, known to the locals as "Cal Club" is located on Lincoln Way, at the north end of historic old town Auburn, CA on Lincoln Way, which was once U.S. Highway 40. The California Club has been serving beer, wine, cocktails and good cheer since 1926. In my opinion, "Cal Club" is one of the finest bars in Placer County. Photo: Just three days after my previous visit, today, March 20, 2026, I once again "opened up" The California Club, with lots of friendly Auburn locals as company. I was on my way to nearby Edelweiss Restaurant 2 to enjoy brunch, and "Cal Club" makes a convenient stop. I can't stay out of this fine bar! The California Club is a favorite of Auburn locals, as it's the only bar located in historic old town. The doors officially open at 10:00 every morning, and by 10:15, the time of my arrival, the compact bar was very busy. It's a great, "old school" bar! If you're a fan of traditional country music, and classic rock n' roll, you've come to the right place. Photo: Today's on-the-house snack included a plate or Ritz crackers, and cheddar cheese slices. This bar is healthy, as there were a few apples! Photo: Meet Kathy, today's amazingly friendly bartender, who toasts the day with a smile, along with a "Breaking Bad IPA" she just poured for me. She treated me, and all the other patrons like rock stars. Photo: I toast friendly bartender Kathy, along with the management and patrons at The California Club, on this first day of spring, 2026. Cheers! Photo: It's just after the 10:00 morning opening time, Tuesday, March 17, 2026, and the bar is filled with locals, enjoying the beautiful morning, and getting St. Patrick's Day off to a great start. Photo: The bar features two pool tables, which take up nearly half of the space in the room. The gentleman at the pool table is T.J., a regular, a great pool player and a nice guy. The other gentleman is withdrawing money from the convenient ATM. Photo: Ralph, another regular, takes aim at a 3-ball on one of the pool tables. You'll see this friendly guy playing pool in the bar practically every day of the week. Photo: To celebrate the day, management set out complimentary munchies that included cheese, salami, crackers and hummus for dipping. I'm not sure how the bag of "Lifesavers" fit in, but they were on the table. This was an unexpected treat, and it made "Cal Club" almost like a restaurant! Photo: Friendly bartender Nicholette tends bar, as she pours another beer. Like Placer County, The California Cub is all-American and very patriotic, and a true slice of Americana. This a friendly, old-school bar. Photo: Meet Nicholette, today's super friendly bartender, who brought me an ice-cold Coors beer with a smile. Photo: I'm a happy guy, as I raise my beer and toast Nicholette, The California Club, and all that's good in the world today on this St. Patrick's Day, 2026. Cheers! The California Club is everything a good, old school bar should be... a local hang-out, a place to relax and unwind, pool tables, mixed drinks, beer, wine, occasional food, snacks and lots of friendly people, both customers and staff alike. The California Club is truly one of my favorite places to spend a pleasant morning or afternoon to just plain hang out and relax. Good times!
