The town of Truckee, CA is a paradise for those who love the outdoors, and is truly a "four-season" place, where you can enjoy an endless variety of leisure activities, anytime of the year. Outdoor recreation in the Truckee area is endless... but if outdoor activities aren't your interest... what about fine dining? Breakfast or lunch? No worries, as Wagon Train Coffee Shop, located on Donner Pass Road, in downtown Truckee has you covered, as they serve delicious breakfast and lunch, every day of the week, starting at 05:30 in the morning. As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences.
Photo: It's a little before 8 in the morning, Monday, September 14, 2026, and I've arrived at Wagon Train Coffee Shop, located in downtown Truckee, CA to enjoy an amazing breakfast.
Photo: As I paused at the front door, I noticed three things that sent me to nirvana. The first thing I noticed was the pained sign on the door advertises that "Breakfast Served All Day..." Second, I noticed the owner is a Navy veteran, and I too am a Navy veteran, it's comforting to support a brother in arms and enjoy a delicious breakfast. The third thing that grabbed my attention was an NRA sticker on the door, as in National Rifle Association, the group that stands for freedom, and our Second Amendment Rights for all law-abiding citizens. Like the owners of this fine restaurant, I am a lifelong member of the NRA, as I support freedom, and the freedom to carry a weapon.
Photo: As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the dining room is very rustic, comfortable and "country." Wagon Train Coffee Shop is a favorite of the Truckee locals, and is a gathering place for those who enjoy a fine breakfast, and friendly company. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by the friendly staff, and the local diners, and as soon you're seated, you'll be part of the extended family. As you ponder the menu, you'll savor the rustic decor, which showcases the spirit of the area.
Photo: Looking out the front bay window of the restaurant to Donner Pass Road, and the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain peaks. The restaurant includes a charming patio on the front porch where you can enjoy outdoor dining, but on the 34-degree morning, dining outdoors wasn't an option for me to enjoy.
Photo: Wagon Train Cafe features a generous counter, located towards the rear of the restaurant facing the kitchen, where the staff picks up completed orders and delivers them to the dining room. Each table and place at the counter is set with a condiment basket, which includes ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, salt, pepper and sugar. To complete the rustic atmosphere, traditional country music, "Willie's Place," from SiriusXM satellite radio is playing the background.
Photo: The "Good Morning - Breakfast Served All Day" section of the menu offers something for every breakfast lover. I scanned the menu, but I kept coming back to "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs," as it's one of my favorite breakfast selections something I rarely resist.
Photo: The Town of Truckee is located at the 6000 foot level, just a few miles east on Donner Summit, and the area offers outstanding outdoor recreation, including skiing, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, big game hunting, and countless other activities. It's mule deer hunting country, and in the past, logging was a major industry of the area. The rustic decor reflects the heritage of Truckee and the surrounding area of Nevada County.

Photo: From the "Good Morning - Breakfast Served All Day" section of the breakfast menu, my choice was "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs," along with the included side of hash brown potatoes, and a large piece of sourdough toast. The sizeable beef patty was seasoned, pounded thin, battered, and deep fried to a crispy, dark golden brown on the outside, with tender, flavorful and juicy texture on the inside, just the way a perfect chicken fried steak should be. It was placed on top of a generous helping of thick, rich sausage gravy, with many chunks of country sausage, and sprinkled with ground pepper. Oh my... what a way to get a Monday breakfast started! The side of hash browns were griddle-fried to a beautiful golden brown on the outside, crispy and crunchy, yet tender, white and juicy on the inside, which made for perfect hash brown potatoes. I ordered my eggs fried sunyside up, which is my de facto standard when I order hash browns, and they arrived as ordered, fried perfectly. The breakfast rounded out with a thick slice of buttered sourdough toast, delicious in itself, which helped me clean up every bit of goodness from my plate. With my first bite of the chicken fried steak, I was rewarded with a taste sensation cornucopia of the tender beef, the crisp, deep fried batter, and the luscious, country gravy. This chicken fried steak was simply amazing! The crispy hash browns, the eggs and the buttered sourdough toast made for the perfect sides, and made this a perfect breakfast. The breathtaking view of the mountains I enjoyed from my seat at the counter made the savory mountain cuisine taste even better!

You'll enjoy your breakfast... and you'll leave with a smile on your face, along with a full stomach, as the breakfast is not only delicious, but the portion is generous. The weather was perfect, the breakfast was amazing, and the staff at Wagon Train Coffee Shop are as friendly as it gets. When you're in the mood for a delicious breakfast, with an "old school," "old west" slant... along with friendly western hospitality, look no further than Wagon Train Cafe, located in beautiful Truckee, CA. The breakfast, along with the friendly staff are as good as it gets. The decor is "country," the food is outstanding, and the staff, along with the regular customers, are as friendly as it gets. Say "hello" to the country, saddle up, and enjoy an amazing breakfast, and savor the finest breakfast that downtown Truckee has to offer, as you enjoy fine dining at Wagon Train Coffee Shop.
