Highway House Restaurant is located along California State Highway 49, on the south end of Jackson, CA, and offers delicious Americana "comfort food," served by friendly staff, in a comfortable, inviting atmosphere. This fine restaurant opens every day of the week at 8:00 in the morning, and is open for dinner every day except Sunday. As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences.
Photo: It's just past the 08:00 morning opening time, Thursday, June 18, 2026 and I've arrived at Highway House Restaurant, located in Jackson, CA to enjoy a fine Mexican breakfast. Alright, I confess that I'd seen the menu online, and I pretty much knew what I'd be ordering.
Photo: As you enter the main dining room, you're greeted with a "Please wait to be seated" and a waiter or waitress who will seat you. On this early Thursday morning, the dining room was sparsely seated, so my waitress cheerfully said that I could sit anywhere. There are perks to arriving to a lightly seated dining room, as the staff is less busy, and there aren't fellow diners who might be annoyed by my ever-present camera.
Photo: Just past the greeting counter and to the right, the restaurant has a full-service bar, and the staff can mix any cocktail of your choice. A beer would have been great with breakfast, but I had a two hour drive ahead of me, so a beer wasn't an option.

Photo: I'm all smiles, as I know I'm in for a breakfast treat! Highway House Restaurant serves a delicious breakfast! I had no need of the ketchup or the Tabasco sauce, as Cholula hot sauce is my breakfast sauce of choice.
Photo: From the "Mexican Breakfast" section of the menu, I went with "Chile Verde and Eggs," with hash brown potatoes and corn tortillas. Beans, fresh salsa and sour cream were served on the side to round out this delicious breakfast. The menu describes this breakfast as, "Three eggs with slow simmered pork chile verde served with pinto beans and breakfast potatoes and your choice flour or corn tortillas." I describe this breakfast as delicious. The showcase of this fine breakfast was the chile verde, as it featured large chunks of seasoned, tender slow roasted pork, in a green, chile verde sauce. The taste of this dish was amazing, as it was bold, flavorful, rich, with just enough "kick" to add a zesty taste sensation, but nothing to make Aunt Lucy from Boston wish for her baked beans. This delicious entrée truly had south-of-the-border influences, and will give Mexican cuisine aficionado something to smile about. The slab of hash brown potatoes were diner-perfect, as they were crispy golden brown on the outside, white and tender on the inside, just the way perfect hash brown potatoes are created. I ordered my eggs cooked sunnyside up - they go great with hash browns when fried using that method - and my eggs arrived perfectly fried, as per my order. The side of pinto beans arrived separately from the main plate, along with a cup of fresh, in-house made salsa and a cup of sour cream. The pinto beans were simply "pot beans," which is to say they were boiled, and not seasoned. That said, the mild taste of the pinto beans mixed well with the chile verde, especially when fresh salsa and sour cream was added to the mix. Rounding out the breakfast were three warm, moist corn tortillas, that were so amazingly fresh that you could almost think they had just been baked in the kitchen. I used them to clean up every drop of sauce from the chile verde and the pinto beans. Delicious! Highway House Cafe is noted among locals as serving Midwestern cuisine, but when it comes to a Mexican breakfast, management and the skilled chef know how to create a breakfast that would make any cattleman in Dodge City proud. As for me, I left satisfied, happy and with a smile on my face.

I moved the pinto beans and fresh salsa over to my main plate, and topped the beans with the sour cream, as it made it easier for me to dig in and enjoy. A bit of Cholula hot sauce enhanced my breakfast, as Cholula was made for breakfast. My breakfast was simply delicious, and thanks to the large portion, I was happy and satisfied until dinner. I loved the food, the inviting atmosphere, and the friendly service. No wonder this restaurant is a favorite of Amador County locals, travelers on the highway, and "foodies," who appreciate fine gold country dining.
