Since 2004, Granite Rock Grill has been a favorite breakfast and lunch restaurant for Rocklin, CA locals, and is a destination for "foodies" all over western Placer County, and the greater Sacramento area. The food is simply delicious, the presentation is stunning, the price is right, and the staff is super friendly, and will treat you like a rock star. As an added bonus, if you're a lover of hot sauce, you'll enjoy one of the largest selection of hot sauces, that's bigger than your imagination! As with all restaurant reviews I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences. Photo: It's just past the 07:30 morning opening time, Friday, December 26, 2025, and I've arrived at Granite Rock Grill, located in Rocklin, CA, to enjoy a special holiday breakfast of "Prime Rib and Eggs." The newspaper rack must have blown over thanks to yesterday's rain and wind storm. Back in the day, Rocklin was known for granite quarries, hence the name of the restaurant. However, there is a single, HUGE granite rock in back of the restaurant, and I wonder... was the restaurant named after that big rock? I should have asked. Photo: Granite Rock Grill is open for breakfast and lunch, every day of the week, and these holiday hours were posted on social media. Normal business hours are 06:30 AM to 2:00 PM. The advertisement for today's special breakfast was listed on another social media post. Photo: It's the day after Christmas, and the restaurant is festively decorated for the holiday. I arrived just after the 07:30 opening time, as I was hungry for prime rib. Photo: The dining room is very spacious, and furnished with booths and tables of many sizes. Each table is set with condiments, including two bottles of Tabasco sauce, which for a reason I don't understand is the most popular hot sauce on the west coast. The breakfast counter is located at the extreme far end of the dining room, next to the kitchen. The dining room includes a cheery fireplace but it wasn't lit today. No worries for me, as I sat at the counter. Photo: The spacious breakfast counter is located at the rear of the restaurant, next to the kitchen. When I dine by myself, I prefer to sit at the counter, as I can chit-chat with the staff and watch them in action. It's also makes a great vantage point for photography. Photo: The first page from the menu listing classic breakfast favorites. The founder of the restaurant, Kay Gardner, named menu selections after friends and customers who frequently ordered the dishes that bear their names. "Prime Rib and Eggs" isn't listed on the menu, or on the restaurant's website. Photo: After placing my breakfast order, I sat at the counter, admiring the pan of freshly baked biscuits the baker had just taken out of the oven. The smell was heavenly! Photo: At the front of the restaurant, near the checkout counter, the "Firecracker Station" is mounted on the wall, and offers a wide array of hot sauces, Californian, Mexican and practically anything you can imagine. Each table is set with two varieties of Tabasco hot sauce, but if you long for something else, the "Firecracker Station" is for you to enjoy. You simply grab a bottle of your choice, bring it over to your table and enjoy. As a courtesy to the staff and to your fellow diners, it would be great to return the bottle to the shelf when you're finished enjoying. Sauce is put on the shelves according to the degree of heat. I went with a bottle of Cholula Hot Sauce, the "Chipotle" version, which is among my favorites, although Pepper Plant "Roasted Garlic" is up there. It was a difficult choice, but I went with the Cholula for today's breakfast. Today I didn't see any Valentina Salsa Picante, which is usually present, but the rotation of sauces is varied and endless. Photo: My breakfast has just been placed at the kitchen window and is ready be delivered to me, as I sit at the counter. Notice the "old school" order wheel, which is not used any more and is now simply a decoration, as my friendly server, Rebecca, took my order using a small handheld device. Photo: My server, Rebecca, grabs my breakfast to deliver it to me where I'm sitting, maybe ten feet distant. Photo: Meet Rebecca, my amazingly friendly server, who engaged me in friendly conversation and treated me like a member of her family. Photo: I toast Rebecca, the friendly staff, and my amazing breakfast with a bottle of Cholula hot sauce, as I'm ready to enjoy one of the best breakfasts in western Placer County. This was a breakfast that all breakfast lovers, and "foodies" would crave!
Photo: Holidays and special occasions call for a special meal, and on several holidays during the year, Granite Rock Grill showcases a breakfast of prime rib and eggs. This amazing breakfast isn't listed on the menu, but the restaurant publishes the date on social media, usually a few days in advance. Today, which was the Day-After-Christmas was a prime rib day - the restaurant was closed for Christmas Day - and the celebrate the occasion, I ordered a breakfast of prime rib, hash brown potatoes, fried eggs, a freshly baked biscuit, along with an optional side of sausage gravy. Notice the stunning presentation of this amazing breakfast... and it tasted even better than it looked! You enjoy a large slab of prime rib - most likely around 12 ounces - cooked to order, choice of potatoes, eggs cooked your way, with choice of toast or a biscuit. I can't even think of enjoying a biscuit without gravy, so I went with an optional side of gravy, which was a wise choice, as the gravy was as good as it gets. This is a breakfast event custom-tailored for the tastes of Rocklin locals, and for breakfast lovers all over the greater Sacramento area and beyond. The "Prime Rib Breakfast" is one of the finest breakfast served in western Placer County, or maybe even the state of California. It's truly a breakfast for those who savor premium dining for breakfast! I've enjoyed $70.00 breakfast splurges during trips to Las Vegas, but nothing in my breakfast book compares to the prime rib breakfast served at Granite Rock Grill. Talk about breakfast overload to get my Friday morning going! Your perfect morning begins with a large 12-oz or so cut of choice prime rib beef, which was flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth tender, juicy and cooked to order by the talented chef. Today, I went my beef cooked medium, but if medium isn't for you, the talented kitchen staff will be more than happy to grill your prime rib exactly the way you order. The meat was perfectly cooked, tender, flavorful and simply delicious! Not only was it fork-tender and delicious, it was simply beautiful to look at and it was almost to pretty to cut... well... almost... Oh... I almost forgot to mention today's presentation was a work of culinary art, as the slab of beef was medium brown around the edge, but a tender pinkish inside... tender, juicy and delicious, just the way I love it! This is a slab of prime rib to savor and enjoy as a late Christmas present! As an added bonus, a small cup of horseradish sauce AND a cup of au jus were on the plate, to dip your prime rib into. If that wasn't enough, there was the optional bowl of gravy on the side! Such a difficult choice! I alternated between dipping the prime rib in the sauce and the juice, and left the gravy for the biscuit and hash browns. The large slab of hash brown potatoes made the perfect side dish. As in all "old school" diners, the hash browns were golden crispy and crunchy on the outside, and tender, white and juicy on the inside, which made perfect hash brown potatoes. They had just the right amount of salt, golden crispness, and just a little "crunch" on the outside. Simply delicious! Enjoyed as a side dish to the prime rib, dipped into the eggs, or the gravy, the hash browns were simply perfect. The pan of freshly baked biscuits got my attention, so it was natural for me to order a biscuit with my breakfast. A cup with a generous serving of soft butter came with the biscuit... what a combination, and the butter worked wonderful with the biscuit! And then there was the side of gravy... The gravy... this breakfast was "standalone delicious" but why not go the extra mile and add an optional side of sausage gravy? You won't regret it, as the gravy was thick, creamy, rich, full of flavor and included lots of thick chunks of sausage... simply perfect! The gravy could almost make for a standalone side dish, but when you dip hash browns or slices of the biscuit into the gravy... it's always great to order a side of gravy. I ordered my eggs fried sunnyside up, and they arrived fried perfectly as ordered, attractively garnished with a sprig of parsley. I confess that I used some of the Cholula Mexican Hot Sauce on my eggs, as eggs aren't complete without Cholula, as it's a sauce made for breakfast. My breakfast was delicious in every way, as the ingredients were fresh, the food was perfectly cooked, and the presentation was beautiful. Considering the quality, quantity, and the amazingly friendly service, the price was very reasonable for a prime rib breakfast. The price is "Market Value," and it varies, but it won't break your bank, and you'll leave with a full stomach and a smile on your face. Photo: My side of freshly baked biscuit, along with a scoop of soft butter, and my optional side of gravy arrived together, on a smaller, separate plate. The gravy was sprinkled with dried parsley flakes, which added to the taste and to the presentation. The biscuit was light and fluffy, with just the right amount of sweetness and texture. It had been taken out of the oven maybe twenty minutes prior, so it was as fresh as it gets. The smell of the freshly baked biscuit was sensational. I cut off small pieces from the biscuit, buttered them, and dipped each piece into the gravy. What a delicious side dish! Photo: The "main event," with a large slab of delicious prime rib beef, two fried eggs, golden hash brown potatoes, with horseradish sauce and a cup of au jus for dipping. This breakfast was delicious, and a holiday treat! The small paper American flag is a tradition, planted on every dish the restaurant serves. Photo: I cut off a small piece of the prime rib and dipped it into the creamy horseradish sauce, for a breakfast delight. Today's breakfast of "Prime Rib and Eggs" was simply amazing, and I'm at a loss of words to describe how much I enjoyed it, and how delicious it was. It's a holiday treat, offered by Granite Rock Grill on select holidays, so I plan to keep my eye on social media and take advantage of this amazing breakfast the next time it's posted. Cheers! Let's go back to Friday, November 17, 2017 when I enjoyed a previous delicious breakfast at Granite Rock Grill, located in Rocklin, CA. Granite Rock Grill takes breakfast seriously, as their web page states their motto, which reads: "Home of the BEST breakfast in the greater Sacramento Valley/Placer area." That's quite a statement, so on Friday, November 17, 2017, I had to "refresh" my memory, and pay a visit to Granite Rock Grill, so could reacquaint myself with this wonderful restaurant. Photo: Granite Rock Grill appears to be very compact from the outside, but inside, the dining room is very spacious, and offers a mixture of comfortable tables and booths. For a restaurant that serves only breakfast and lunch, Granite Rock Grill has one of the larger dining rooms I've seen during my visits restaurants. Photo: As you walk in the front door, you won't be in doubt as to the name of the restaurant. Note the word play on the old Donny and Marie Osmond song, "A Little Bit Country," as the sign states "A Little Bit Country, a Little Bit Rocklin-Roll." Country music was playing the background, so along with the rustic decor, the restaurant is definitely "country." Many years ago, Rocklin was noted for it's granite quarries - the California state capitol building features granite from Rocklin quarries - so Granite Rock Grill is a fitting name for this fine restaurant. Photo: The main dining room, after you enter the restaurant, and pass the Granite Rock Grill sign and the cashier's station. It's 0630 in the morning on Friday, November 17, 2017, and the spacious dining room is lightly seated, but by 0800, it should be packed, as this is a very popular restaurant of the Rocklin locals. The counter and the kitchen are in located in the rear of the restaurant, in the rear of the photo. Photo: There is a large fireplace on the north wall of the dining room. It was a relatively chilly 48 degrees on this early Friday morning, and I asked the gal dressed in pink, who was preparing tables for soon-to-arrive guests, why the fireplace wasn't lit, and she said they usually don't light it until the dining room begins to fill up. Photo: The south wall of the dining room is decorated with a large, painted mural. I find the name, "Kay's Bakery" interesting, as the owner of the restaurant is named Kay. I neglected to ask her if the mural had anything to do with her, or was it just a coincidence. Photo: I sat at the counter, at the back of the restaurant, so I could witness all of the action, watch the staff at work, and chit-chat with the staff whenever they had a free moment. The counter is very spacious and comfortable, and it made a perfect perch for me. Photo: One page of the extensive breakfast menu. I ended up ordering "Kay's," and I originally planned to order toast, until I notice the large pan of freshly baked biscuits on the counter. Granite Rock Grill is open for breakfast and lunch, and everything listed on the menu is available anytime the restaurant is open, so if you're in the mood to enjoy a burger for breakfast, you've come to the right restaurant. Photo: Each position at the counter and every table is stocked with popular condiments, including in-house made jam. Photo: If you want additional condiments, there is a rack located on the wall near the cashier's station that holds an endless array of picante sauce, some of it imported from Mexico. Somebody must have taken a trip to Mexico, as there were a few varieties that aren't available in the U.S., but are easy to bring back across the border. Whenever I visit Mexico, I usually bring back a supply of picante sauce that is unavailable north of the border. I see a bottle of "Pepper Plant" sauce, which is a classic, medium-hot California style condiment, widely distributed in Northern and Central California. The picante sauce is arranged from mild to hot. You take a bottle, apply the desired amount to your food, and then you return the bottle to the rack for the next diner to use. This is easily the largest collection of hot sauce that I've ever seen at a restaurant in the greater Sacramento area!
Photo: My server, Kay reaches for my breakfast, after it's been passed to her from the kitchen window. The kitchen is partially visible from the counter, which is always a plus for me. Note the "old school" order wheel, which is used to convey orders to the kitchen, just like it was done in the 1950's. The freshly-baked ban of biscuits is to the left of the photo. Kay asked me if I wanted a center or an end biscuit - I pondered the question for a few seconds, as I'd never been asked that question before - and I decided on a end biscuit. I remarked to her that would probably be my most difficult decision of the day, and she got a laugh out of that.
Photo: Meet friendly Kay Gardner, my server today, who just happens to be the owner of the restaurant. My hash brown potatoes and eggs have arrived with a smile, along with my biscuit and cup of gravy, which were delivered after the photo was taken. Update: Kay opened the restaurant back in 2004, as another chapter in her long career of serving delicious cuisine, and providing friendly service. Sadly, she passed away in 2023... her warmth, friendly personality and welcoming grace will be missed by the greater Rocklin community. The western Placer County dining scene was elevated to a new level of excellence, thanks to Kay's guidance. She is missed. Photo: Kay snaps my photo, as I prepare to enjoy a delicious breakfast at Granite Rock Grill. Photo: My "Kay's" breakfast - named after the owner - of hash brown potatoes, two eggs, along with biscuit and gravy. You get your choice of hash brown or country potatoes, and your choice of a biscuit, or several varieties of toast. The gravy is extra, but well worth the small price of admission. This breakfast was PERFECT in every way! No wonder the restaurant advertises as the "Home of the BEST breakfast in the greater Sacramento Valley/Placer area," as today's breakfast is definitely one of the better breakfasts that I've enjoyed in a long time. Note: You MUST order the gravy, as it's pure heaven!
Photo: Perfect hash brown potatoes, trimmed with sprgs of parsley, along with perfectly grilled eggs over easy, as per my order. Photo: Freshly baked biscuit, a small cup of soft butter, along with a side of delicious sausage gravy, trimmed with small slices of parsley. Delicious! Photo: The two-plate presentation looked pretty, but since I was hungry, I combined everything on one plate, in order to "mix and match" as I ate. Today was especially decadent, as I buttered the biscuit and then dipped it in the delicious gravy. This breakfast was amazing! Back on Friday, March 30, 2012, the now defunct Sacramento Breakfast Club enjoyed a meeting at Granite Rock Grill, located in Rocklin, CA. Granite Rock Grill takes breakfast seriously, as their web page states their motto, which reads: "Home of the BEST breakfast in the greater Sacramento Valley/Placer area. That's quite a statement, so on Friday, March 30, 2012, the Sacramento Breakfast Club held today's meeting at Granite Rock Grill, so we could see if their motto is really true. Photo: Granite Rock Grill seems small from the outside, but inside, the dining room is very spacious, and offers a mixture of comfortable tables and booths. For a restaurant that serves only breakfast and lunch, Granite Rock Grill has one of the larger dining rooms of area restaurants. Photo: Our server, Rosa, takes our order. She pushed three tables together to accommodate today's members. Only a portion of the dining room is shown in the photo, but it gives an idea of how large this room is. The mural on the wall is a reminder of years gone by, when the restaurant was known as "Gold Miner Cafe." Photo: Granite Rock Grill features a small, yet comfortable breakfast counter. When I dine alone, I always sit at the breakfast counter, as I like to be near the action. Photo: Our friendly server, Rosa, takes Gerry's order of corned beef hash and eggs on this sunny Friday morning, March 30, 2012. Photo: Rosa poses for the camera, with a portion of our breakfast she's about to place on the table. Rosa and all of the staff at Granite Rock Grill are some of the friendliest folks we're had the pleasure to meet, and are very attentive, and make you feel at home. I give Granite Rock Grill the "coffee cup refill award," as there was one staff member who seemed to be dedicated to keeping coffee cups full, and my coffee cup never went below the half-full mark. I lost count of how many cups of coffee I drank after my 10th cup. Seriously... Photo: I had originally planned to order only eggs, potatoes, toast and coffee, but Rosa recited today's specials, and one of them was an Italian sausage omelet, which she called a "pizza omelet," and since I'm a sucker for Italian sausage, I changed my mind and followed her recommendation. The omelet included Italian sausage, salami, bell peppers, onions, parsley, cheese and I don't know what else. I ordered homestyle potatoes, with optional gravy, coffee and sourdough toast. Rosa was right on the money with her recommendation, as this breakfast was superior! The portion was absolutely GIANT, as I couldn't eat it all, even after kicking every bit of eating power that I possess. This breakfast was delicious! By the way, Granite Rock Grill's menu features a vast array of breakfast choices, with everything from super-healthy fruit and cereal, to calorie-bomb breakfasts, such as the breakfast I enjoyed today. Whatever you desire for breakfast, you'll find it at Granite Rock Grill. Photo: Today's members of the Sacramento Breakfast Club, from left to right: Eric Rench, Bev MacLeod, Dan MacLeod, Teri McCloud, Sean McCloud, David DeMario, Betty Townsend and Gerry Townsend. Thanks to Rosa, our super friendly server, for taking the photo. Breakfast at Granite Rock Grill is an awesome experience, as the dining room is huge, attractive and very comfortable, the staff is super friendly and attentive, the portions are gigantic, the presentation is beautiful, and the food is simply delicious. As fast as the question goes, "Does Granite Rock Grill serve the best breakfast in the region?" ... I can't answer that question, but I can tell you that Granite Rock Grill serves a breakfast that members of the Sacramento Breakfast Club will be talking about for a long time to come. Breakfast at Granite Rock Grill is truly an awesome experience, as the dining room is huge, attractive and very comfortable, the staff is super friendly and attentive, the portions are gigantic, the presentation is beautiful, and the food is simply delicious.
