Historic Coulterville is a small town founded during the California Gold Rush that served as a supply centers for quartz and placer mines in Mariposa County. Today, the mining activity has mostly been replaced by ranching and tourism, thanks to the town's proximity to Yosemite National Park, and the town's population hovers just above 100 residents. Visit Coulterville for the history and the scenery, but stay for the fine dining at Coulter Cafe, located inside the general store, in beautiful Coulterville, CA. As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences.
Photo: It's just past the 9:00 morning opening time, Friday, June 19, 2026, and I've arrived at the Coulter Cafe and General Store, located in Coulterville, Ca to enjoy a delicious miner's breakfast. The restaurant, menu and decor reflect on the rich, mining history of Mariposa County.
Photo: The store and restaurant has a comfortable front porch where you can watch the happenings on Main Street as you enjoy a fine breakfast, lunch or pizza. The atmosphere is rich in mining history, and very laid back and relaxing. Many of the stone or adobe buildings in town date back to the 1850's, with many of the wood buildings of 1890's vintage, thanks to three catastrophic fires in the town's early history.
Photo: As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a friendly staff member, invited to sit at the booth of table of your choosing, and given a menu. The decor is rustic, in keeping with the historic nature of the town. The general store is located on the other side of the wall.

National brands in bottles and cans, for your dining pleasure is available in the store... just help yourself and bring it over to your table to enjoy with your meal.

Photo: From the "Breakfast" section of the menu, I ordered "The Classic," with ham as my meat of choice. The menu describes this hearty breakfast as, "Two cage free eggs the way you like them, choice of meat, country potatoes and sourdough toast." I describe this breakfast as delicious. The generous slab of ham was around a half inch thick, juicy, fork-tender and grilled to perfection, showing attractive grill marks. It was so tender that a knife wasn't needed, as a fork worked perfectly. I ordered my two eggs fried sunnyside up, and they arrived as per my order, perfectly fried sunnyside up. On this Friday morning I was in the mood for ham, but if ham isn't for you, bacon or sausage are offered as your meat choices. The country potatoes were coarsely diced Russet potatoes with skin, seasoned, and fried to a delicious, slightly crispy golden brown on the outside, and tender on the inside. The chef has talent, as these potatoes were wonderful, and made the perfect side dish for the eggs and ham. Rounding out my breakfast was a piece of sourdough toast, perfectly toasted and buttered. Breakfast was simply delicious! The juicy, tender ham, eggs and rustic country potatoes all worked together to make a scrumptious breakfast combination, and the sourdough toast helped to mop every drop of goodness. Breakfast at Coulter Cafe is highly recommended!
