We woke up early on Sunday, May 30, 2010, when the sun rose over the mountains to our east, at the CA4WDC's 39th annual Hi-Desert Roundup, looking forward to another great breakfast at Chef Andy's Ruff Rock Run Café.

Chef Andy's Café is a tradition at Hi-Desert Roundup and Panamint Valley Days, and it never ceases to amaze me how Andy and his crew set up a complete restaurant in the Mojave Desert, and serve delicious food to hungry four wheelers, at a very reasonable price.  Not only is the food delicious, but it's served by friendly four wheelers, and a portion of the proceeds go to the association to help keep our public land public, and our trails open.  We don't miss having to hassle with food storage, cooking or doing dishes, and we love the fact that we're able to spend much more time enjoying the beautiful desert and today, we had the vehicle games to look forward to.

So we were up and an 'em when the sun came up, and we made our way over to Andy's for breakfast.

Oh yes, that's right, it was Sunday morning, and because the action happens a little bit later in the day, Chef Andy doesn't open the Ruff Rock Run Café until 0700.  We arrived at the café shortly after it opened, and the line was open, with Marilyn taking orders, several folks mixing pancake batter, cooking sausage, hash brown potatoes and other goodies, with Chef Andy himself and another helper doing the line cooking.  Yesterday, I'd scoped out Matthew's breakfast burrito, and today that sounded like what I was going to order for breakfast.

As I was placing my order, I ran into Steve Gardiner and Ray Leuschner, who convinced me to lead the Jail Canyon Run at this year's Panamint Valley Days, another primo CA4WDC four wheel drive event, held on the second weekend in November in beautiful Panamint Valley.  For my effort in agreeing to lead a run, I was rewarded with a free helping of homestyle potatoes, covered in Chef Andy's gravy.

Photo:  Matthew toasts the photographer (me) with a Mudslide, which makes the perfect side dish to enjoy with his omelet and potatoes.  I have a Margarita on the table, beside my breakfast burrito.  It was ok to have drinks for breakfast, as we weren't doing any driving, as today was the day to watch the Sunday vehicle games.

Back at camp, Matthew mixed himself a Mudslide, and I mixed a Margarita; nothing like a mixed drink or two to wash down a good breakfast in beautiful Stoddard Valley.  Matthew enjoyed a breakfast of scrambled eggs with potatoes covered in gravy, and I enjoyed a sausage, egg and cheese burrito.  Both Matthew and I enjoyed our breakfasts, as you can't beat Chef Andy's Ruff Rock Run Café for a great breakfast during Hi-Desert Roundup.
