Roseville, CA is a regional railroad hub, where several subdivisions of the Union Pacific Railroad converge and branch out, and it's home to the largest railroad freight classification yard on the west coast, the J.R. Davis railroad yard. Besides freight service, Roseville sees numerous passenger trains, including the regional Capitol Corridor which connects Northern California with the Bay Area and Amtrak's California Zephyr, a long distance passenger train that runs daily from Emeryville, CA to Chicago, IL. If railroads are you passion, Roseville is truly a great place to live!
Photo: It's 10:48 in the morning, Saturday, August 22, 2026 and Amtrak #6, the California Zephyr is pulling into the station three minutes ahead of schedule. The station is located on the west side of the City Yard, at milepost 106.5. That's the Union Pacific Railroad Roseville Diesel Shop in the background, built in the 1950's, and is used for diesel locomotive maintenance.
Photo: Today, Amtrak #6 is led by #148, a General Electric P42DC and graduate of the Class of March 2003. The two gentlemen waving to the engineer seem to know him, and they aren't dressed as typical passenger.
Photo: The conductor jumped off the Superliner passenger car and shook hands with these two gentlemen before they boarded the train. I was wondering if they are railroad officials traveling incognito? Whoever they are, they seemed to know everybody on the train crew.
Photo: Passengers debark the train from near the middle, while other passengers board the train, near the end, from the glass enclosed passenger shelter. The historic Roseville train station isn't used by the railroad anymore, as it's owned by the City of Roseville and seems to be mostly used for storage. The depot offers benches for comfortable waiting that shield you from the hot, Placer County sun and later in the year, the 22+ inches of annual rail the area enjoys.
Photo: Engine #148 waits for the 10:56 departure time, with the Sierra Nevada foothills in the distance, and Donner Pass, Reno and ultimately Chicago to the east. Train #6 is scheduled to stop in Roseville for 5 minutes, but since it arrived three minutes ahead of schedule, it was able to linger a little longer, but left Roseville right on schedule.

Photo: It's 10:56 in the morning, Saturday, August 22, 2026, and California Zephyr has left the Roseville station on schedule, and is headed east for Colfax, Truckee, Reno and points east. It's always fun to spend some time at the depot to watch the California Zephyr and to dream about someday making the trip. Some day!
