Editor Note: This article was written by Jerry Flinn, and Jerry took the photos, but the editor of this web site has made a few minor changes. My friend Jerry gets credit for the article, as all your editor did was publish it to our web site. Ever since the winter weather started in November, I've been driving by a place called Pleasant Park Restaurant. And, yes, I've also seen the Wednesday special on the sign outside. It is a hot beef sandwich for $5.25 and sounds like my kind of place. Now all I had to do was get there on that day of the week. I finally was able to pay a visit last week... Photo: The restaurant's sign is easy to spot. It's Wednesday, February 01, 2006, and we're ready to enjoy a delicious lunch at Pleasant Park Restaurant. Photo: The wait staff, from left to right: Juanita Perez, Joni and Elva, our waitress. One customer said Juanita is "a good waitress and good looking." What more can you possibly say? You will never guess what I had... Yep, the hot beef sandwich lunch special, and I have to say it is quite a deal, as it's served with mashed potatoes, corn, and really good brown gravy. I'm sure glad I finally stopped in! My wife ordered the same meal, and was able to eat her entire lunch. This family-friendly restaurant serves mostly American "comfort foods," but the menu also includes a variety of Mexican entrees, as Mexican food is very popular in the lower Rio Grande Valley. We have a couple of friends that go here regularly for hamburgers and frito pie, which is a local favorite. During today's visit, there were quite a few diners enjoying various varsities of burgers and they told me they were pretty darn good. Such is life at Pleasant Park Restaurant! Photo: The restaurant's lead cook Patty Castelan, at work, and crafting my hot beef sandwich. She's a nice person and a great cook! Photo: Lana Wacenske is tending a bacon burger. When it comes to the griddle and the deep fryer, Lana is a pro! Not to mention, she's a nice person. They run a different special Monday through Saturday. Some examples of these are on Monday, they serve meatloaf and on Tuesday it's pork chops. Mmmmmmmmmmm comfort foods! And don't forget the desserts, including the most beautiful pies you've ever seen. I understand Tami Rodriguez comes in at 4 in the morning to bake these. (Editor's note: I wonder if she makes pies while listening to the classic Faron Young country song, "It's Four in the Morning?") Sorry but I don't get up early enough to watch this but I really appreciate her work. Thanks Tami. I was too full but I promise I'll be back.
Photo: Hot beef, potatoes, gravy and corn up close and personal. Pleasant Park Restaurant serves my kind of "comfort food!" Photo: Our friends, Gene and Joanne Mordecai love this place, and they're regulars. Gee Gene, you don't look very happy that I snapped your photo, and I bet you never knew it would wind up on my web site. The service was really good. Our waitress, Elva knows her job, as she anticipated our every whim. While we were enjoying our meal, I watched our hostess work other tables, and the service was top of the line. Pleasant Park Restaurant has been in business for many years and I can tell the entire staff has the experience to run a really nice place. Such a great dining experience! Our bill was around $13.00 with the two sandwiches and drinks, which is good value considering I wasn't hungry later for dinner. So, come on by and enjoy the country hospitality where all the food is homemade. Photo: Juanita Perez holds one of her delicious, freshly-baked pies that Pleasant Park Restaurant is famous for. We love the "old school" blackboard the daily specials are posted on, as it adds charm to this wonderful restaurant. We enjoyed a superior dining experience, as we were treated to delicious food, friendly staff and a truly enjoyable restaurant. We recommend Pleasant Park Restaurant when you're hungry for lunch or dinner in La Feria, Texas. If you have any suggestions or comments, my e-mail is: [email protected].
