The historic Hotel Nevada, located in the heart of beautiful downtown Ely, at the intersection of 5th and Aultman Streets, advertises their $4.99 steak and eggs breakfast special in fliers distributed in every motel around Ely, Nevada, by word of mouth, and billboards posted along U.S... highways 50 and 6.  I love breakfast, especially at a bargain price of under five bucks, so I had to check out the steak and egg special, offered by the Hotel Nevada.

Photo:  Hotel Nevada is the most imposing structure in Ely, and it prides itself on it's western hospitality, as noted on the huge mural, painted on the east side of the building.  We're looking west, on Aultman Street, the main drag in Ely, Nevada.

Photo:  Hotel Nevada at night, or more correctly, early morning, at 0530, March 17, 2007, just before I had the  pleasure to enjoy  a delicious breakfast.

So do you really get a decent steak and eggs breakfast for $4.99, or is it just a rip-off, loss-leader variety?  No, Hotel Nevada's steak and eggs special is a real breakfast, the sort of breakfast who will make a true breakfast lover's eyes shine, as the meal includes two eggs, cooked any way that you like them, a huge portion of hash brown potatoes, an 8-oz steak, cooked to your individual taste, with biscuits and gravy on the side, and a little garnish of melon with sliced parsley, mostly to enhance the presentation.  Yeah, you have to pay a buck extra for coffee, but the coffee is soooo delicious, and when you add it all together, you're looking at a breakfast for the price of under $6.00, which would cost about twice as much of Hotel Nevada's price elsewhere.  You can't beat the price, the quantity, the presentation, nor can you beat the quality of the meal.  Hotel Nevada serves a delicious breakfast at a rock-bottom price, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Photo:  The entrance to the restaurant is flanked by Harley's.  Hotel Nevada prides itself on it's western heritage, and it's good ol' boy attitude.

Hotel Nevada's Restaurant is easy to find, as its located on the ground floor, in the casino.  If you're a fan of casinos, Hotel Nevada has a surprisingly large casino, considering that Ely has a population of only around 3,000 citizens, but it's the largest town for literally, hundreds of miles of sagebrush and piñon pines, and commands a huge trading area.  The entrance to the restaurant is marked by a neon PIZZA sign, and is flanked by a couple of Harley Davidson motorcycles, one of which is being ridden by a very realistic dummy, complete with helmet and riding gear.  There's also a funky figure of a chef, holding a white board where daily specials are posted.  At my visit, at 5:30 on Monday, March 19, 2007, there weren't any specials posted, nor were there many customers.

Photo:  The owner of the hotel loves western memorabilia, and John Wayne would be proud of this exhibit.  Heck, John Wayne actually stayed at the Hotel Nevada, and he loved the way they cooked his eggs, and he raved about the fantastic breakfasts they serve.

I was greeted at the door by a friendly waitress, who seated me a well-worn booth, not far from the door.  She began to present a menu to me, and I waived her off and said that I wanted a cup of coffee and their steak and egg special.  She laughed, and mentioned to me that they serve hundreds of them on a daily basis, as the special is available around the clock.  She asked me the standard questions:  How do you want your eggs?  Over easy.  How do you want your steak cooked?  Medium.  Simple, and straight to the point.  Hotel Nevada also features a $1.49 breakfast special of eggs, toast and hash browns, but I was on vacation and I wanted more!

Photo:  I chatted with Mary, our friendly, but somewhat shy waitress, and somehow she allowed me to take her photo, and publish it on the world wide web.

The decor of Hotel Nevada's Restaurant is very western, dated, and funky, and it almost reminds me of a Route 66 roadhouse, with a combination of Hollywood and western decor.  The waitress told me that the owner is a huge fan of western movies and actors who performed in that genre, as the walls are decorated with photos and movie promotional posters of John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, along with Winchester rifles that belonged to them.  The decor isn't just limited to western action figures, as there's a whole wall featuring framed photos of famous professional boxers, such as George Foreman, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier, Joe Walcott, Cassius Clay, and many photos going back to the days of John L. Sullivan.  If that isn't enough, there's plenty of photos and displays to keep a motorcycle enthusiast happy.  The area around Ely, and White Pine County, are noted as choice hunting grounds for mule deer and elk, and there are many photos of hunters with their trophies, and a few mounted mule deer heads on the walls.  See what I mean about how the decor is a combination of Hollywood and the old west?  I took all of this in while I was enjoying my delicious coffee, reportedly made by Starbucks.

Photo:  What does $4.99 buy you, 27/7 at Hotel Nevada?  A delicious breakfast of steak and eggs, any way you like 'em, hash browns, and a big ol' plate of biscuits and gravy.

My meal was delivered to my booth in only about 10 minutes, and arrived hot, juicy and exactly as I'd ordered it. The eggs were fried perfectly, the portion of hash brown potatoes was huge, crispy and not at all greasy, and the steak was juicy as it sported grill marks on the outside, yet it was tender and pink on the inside, just the way I like it.  The biscuits were fresh, made in-house, and the sausage gravy was to-die-for.  At $4.99, this is a breakfast that you can't pass up.

Photo:  My lovely dining companion, Kristina, enjoys her huge $4.99 breakfast of steak, scrambled eggs, hash brown potatoes, with a stack of pancakes on the side.  Only at Ely's Hotel Nevada!

My dining companion, Kristina, a long-time friend of my oldest daughter Jacquie, definitely enjoyed her huge breakfast of steak, hash browns, scrambled eggs, and a stack of pancakes on the side.  She and I are breakfast soul mates, as she's a girl who appreciates a good breakfast.  Hotel Nevada is a true breakfast lover's paradise!

No matter what hour of the day, or night, you desire a delicious breakfast at a rock-bottom price, head over to Hotel Nevada and enjoy their steak and egg special.  You won't regret it!
