Althought Taco Loco is located along the main tourist walk, from the U.S. border to downtown Tijuana, and could be considered a restaurant that caters to American tourists, that doesn't stop them from serving delicious, authentic, Mexican, "street food" cusine, that caters to the Norteamerican tourists who pass by, and the many locals who stop by for a beer, or a fine meal of authentic Tijuana, Mexican cuisine. Photo: Taco Loco is located along Calle 123, just across the street from the wax museum. The restaurant definitely caters to tourists, as it's located on a strategic artery between the border and the touristy part of downtown Tijuana, but Taco Loco serves authentic Mexican food. Folks... as soon as you step south of the border, you're in Mexico. Photo: My friendly server for the evening, Rafaela relaxes at the bar, as a local marichi band takes up station near a table. As you enjoy your tacos, you're subjected to the Photo: After ordering a Sol beer, I was treated to two varieties of fresh, in-house made salsa, to enjoy with my delicious tortilla chips. Photo: I got Rafaela to smile, and pose for me, as she delivers my plate of carne asada tacos to the table. Despite the fact that Taco Loco is located on the tourist walk, the staff of the restaurant speak minimal English. What the heck? You're in Mexico!!! Photo: The complete meal, with the price well under five U.S. dollars. Despite the fact that Taco Loco is located along the "tourist walk," they serve authentic Mexican food, at reasonable prices... my lunch of two tacos and two beers cost lest than five bucks... which represented an outstanding value. As of this writing on Wednesday, May 5, 2011, the halcyon days of dollar beer in Tijuana have long disappeared. Photo: Up close and personal... two delicious carne asada tacos, as per Taco Loco. Authentic Mexican food... as good as it gets... Photo: Rafaela giggled as I took her photo, as she relaxed between customers, and crushed corn tortillas, to make food to feed the pigeons. Photo: Rafaela spent her free time feeding pigeons, who are frequent non-paying customers of Taco Loco, who frequent Articulo 123. Would feeding pigeons and paying customers at the same time "fly" north of the border? Maybe not, but it's a normal thing at Taco Loco. This would not "fly" north of the border, but despite the fact that you're a half mile "pigeon flight" south of the border... folks... you're in Mexico. Photo: I snap a shot of the kitchen, which is in the open, in plain view... such is the custom with street restaurants in Mexico. Photo: A local marichi band came by, and the seated gentleman allowed them to serenade him. I'm not sure of how much he paid them to hear the tune "El Caballo Blanco," which is a popular Mexican folk song, but when the verse was sung about the horse galloping across Tijuana, the old guy came to life, along with the folks at adjoining tables. Photo: Rafaela and unnamed co-worker relax at the full-service bar. Note the hanging baskets of oranges... if you order a drink in Tijuana that contains oranges, you get the real thing - oranges. Taco Loco does cater to tourists, yet their food is as good as it gets in Tijuana's Zona Centro. You will enjoy dining with a local, or maybe you'll sit at the same table with a tourist from Japan... and as you enjoy your meal, friendly Rafaela, and the other staff, will engage you in conversation... in Spanish! Hey, you're in Mexico!!! Most of the staff, including Rafaela speak some English, but when you visit Taco Loco, engage your Spanish. Oh yes... the beer, the service... the people watching, and the low prices make this place a must-visit if you visit Tijuana. Taco
