After I checked into my somewhat expensive motel room, in beautiful Bahia de Los Angeles, and had taken care of essential business, such as purchasing beer and ice, my mind travelled to other areas, such as the age-old question: What-are-you-gonna-eat-for-dinner?  Not a problem if you're staying in Bahia de Los Angeles, as the answer to dinner could easily be:  Fish tacos.  After all, fish tacos were invented during the 1950's in San Felipe, 200 miles to the north, and seem to be a regional favorite of Baja locals, and gringo tourists as well, as the cusine of fish tacos has spread south, along the eastern side of the Baja California penninsula.  So on the Wednesday evening of October 3, 2007, my choice of cusine was fish tacos, and my restaurant of choice was Lizeth, which is located just a block north of Motel Las Hamacas, where I was staying, along the unnamed main street of town.

Photo:  Tacos Lizeth is co-located with the mercado that bears the same name, and the same ownership.  Note the Ford Explorer taxi parked next to the restaurant, also owned by the Lizeth's.

Actually, Tacos Lizeth is a part of the main enterprise of the business, Mercado Lizeth, as Tacos Lizeth is a small restaurant that is located in front of the main business, the liquor and grocery store.  Lizeth is a typical small restaurant, as the building is open to the elements, it has a walk-up counter, condiments are displayed on the counter, and it has a friendly girl who not only takes your order, but cooks your food, delivers your food to you, and takes your money at the end of the meal.

Sure, I know that the food police condemn one-person restaurants, as money is the root of evil, and money seems to be the root of all things unclean...  Translate that to mean that if one person does everything, the restaurant should be avoided, or you'll probably die from some terrible disease... Yet, how can you resist a restaurant when the solo operator is friendly, cooks your meal before your eyes, and only charges MEX $10.00 per delicious fish taco?  I can't resist the temptation, so I elected to enjoy a delicious meal of fish tacos at Tacos Lizeth.

Photo:  The cook begins to prepare my delicious tacos.  Note the huge selection of condiments in disposable containers on the order counter, and the menu on the wall, where the prices appear to have recently been changed. Despite that probability, the delicious tacos are still a bargain.

So I bellied up to the bar, and gazed at the menu, posted in the kitchen, which sports the delicious entrees that Tacos Lizeth serves, including tacos de carne asada, adobada, tortas, tacos de pescado, shrimp, and much more. Tacos de Pescado was on my "wish list" for the night, so I simply placed my order, and, as a footnote, added the phrase, "con todo," which means that I wanted everything on my fish tacos.  My belief is if you're paying for the taco, then you want to get everything added to it; in Mexico, all extra condiments, added to your taco, are free...  So I ordered two fish tacos, "con todo," and sat at one of the tables, placed in front of the restaurant, and watched as the lady operating the restaurant placed four pieces of floured fish into a frying pan, and placed two medium -sized corn tortillas on the griddle to cook.  Most taquerias only give you one piece of fish per taco, at Tacos Lizeth, you get two pieces, which makes for a meal.

Photo:  How many times do you get to capture a shot like this?  Note the tortillas are lightly "blistered," in true Baja California fashion, and the fish is golden brown, which adds up to... delicious.

In a matter of minutes, my tacos were ready to eat.  Since I'd ordered my tacos, "con todo," I didn't feel the need to add any additional condiments, as the tacos included chopped cilantro, shredded lettuce, and runny guacamole. Additional condiments, such as salsa verde, chopped tomatoes, diced white onions and more were located on the counter, but I was happy with what I had, and eager to commence with the mission:  Enjoy a couple of delicious fish tacos!

As I was eating my tacos, I couldn't help but to notice that the prices for the tacos were new, as it appeared that they had been pasted over the old prices.  Prices of everything are high in Bahia de Los Angeles, but the price of these tacos were the same price that you'd pay at a small restaurant in Tijuana or Ensenada, and at around U.S. $.90 each, I had nothing to complain about.

Photo:  Two perfectly prepared fish tacos, with all the condiments.  I especially love the runny guacamole, as the guac really compliments the fried fish.

The fish was golden and crunchy on the outside, and moist and tender on the inside, the tortillas were soft and pliable, yet did not break or crack.  The condiments were fresh and delicious, with just the right, "snappy" texture. If you're in the mood for a delicious fish taco, you can't go wrong at Tacos Lizeth.
