Tacomiendo is a small seafood restaurant, located next to Ensenada's famous Mercado do Mariscos, or as known to gringos, the Fish Market. The side that faces the seafood market is open, so when you're strolling by you can look in and see the cute help, and read their impressive menu. Not to mention you can see what is perhaps, the most colorful decor of all seafood restaurants located next to the fish market. The walls are painted bright yellow with dark blue trim, and the help wears bright orange shirts with blue aprons. Photo: It's a pleasant Sunday afternoon in early May, 2005, and the staff at Tacomiendo seems quite interested as I snap their photo. Excpet for the paint, the uniforms and the decour, Tacomiendo is nearly identical to every other restaurant on "Fish Taco Row." Yes, the food and the condiments are identical to every other restaurant in the area. Photo: As you face the restaurant from the street, the counter where you are greeted and where the food is cooked is to the left. You can't help but to notice their menu; it's hand lettered and taped to the counter. Actually, their menu is quite extensive, because, in addition to seafood tacos, they prepare seafood cocktails and complete meals, with rice and beans as side dishes. To the right is a picnic table, covered with a colorful yellow and orange table cloth, where the condiments are located. Speaking of condiments, you can choose from green salsa, red salsa, creamy guacamole, white sauce, onion slices, cilantro, cabbage and radish slices. Of course there's a bowl of the always-present limes, the national garnish of Mexico. You can eat inside or dine outside on their patio, as there are tables inside and outside. You you want a coke or a beer? Just go the fridge, slide open a glass door, and grab your own. In the fashion of all small Mexican restaurants and street vendors, they don't have a cash register, nor do they keep tabs on your bill. It's totally on the honor system. Photo: Tacomiendo seems to be the most labor-intensive restaurant near the fish market. They have two female cooks, two waitresses and a waiter. Their service is friendly, fast and the food is good. When they were in between customers, the staff amused themselves by talking to each other and watching the goings-on around the Mercado de Mariscos. Photo: I ordered two fish tacos, and I got the watch them being cooked, before my eyes. The tacos were delicious, but nearly identical to every other fish taco served in the area. The restaurants near the Fish Market cater to tourists, but you'll find plenty of locals enjoying the fine cusine. Photo: I ordered two fish tacos. When my tacos were finished, I headed over to the garnish table, and loaded my tacos with all the garnishes I could load them up with. Then, I sat down at a table, munched on the delicious tacos, and did some serious people-watching of the many folks doing what they do on this pleasant Sunday afternoon, May 8, 2005. If you love fresh fish tacos, loaded with fresh, locally-grown garnishes, Tacomiendo is a good place to go. Eat, drink, relax and people-watch; this place has it all!
