Carnitas El Ruly's is a small, husband and wife restaurant, that operates out of a small, very stationary trailer, with a flat tire, and the tongue propped up on concrete blocks. They only sell pork carnitas... which basically is cooked, shredded pork, served on corn tortillas and garnished with diced cabbage. Carnitas El Ruly's is honest, simple and right to the point.
Photo: Carnitas El Ruly's is located along Av. "B" next to the municipal park, which could be called Los Algodones' "taco row." Check out the dilapidated trailer, and the flat tire. You are treated to stereo "banda" music, coming from the single tower speaker, sans front grill, but you only get to listen to one track, as the other track doesn't have a speaker. Condiments and garnishes are non-existence, as El Ruly's is truly a bare-bones operation.
Photo: Wife cooks slabs of pork fat on the griddle, which will be rendered into lard, and placed into the dented can, which serves as a pot, which is heating on the griddle. I LOVE these unique, mom and pop operations!
Photo: Cooked pork, ready for carnitas, taken from the griddle and ready to be sliced, and made into carnitas. If you're a fan of pig's feet, check out the hooves to the upper left of the photo. Hubby can be seen slicing pork for the carnitas. I requested some meat from one of the hooves, and he gladly obliged. I wonder what the health inspectors north of the border would say if they saw this photo? I loved the carnitas, prepared on the street in Los Algodones, and I lived happily ever after to record the blessed event.
Photo: Husband hands me my plate of freshly prepared carnitas, El Ruly's style. In keeping with the format at many small Mexican street vendors, Carnitas El Ruly's presents you order on a plastic plate, and when you're finished with your meal, you hand it back to them, either to ask for more, or to give it to them to clean. Many operations cover their plates with a disposable plastic baggie, El Ruby's does not... don't know why...
Photo: My two pork carnitas, on toasted corn tortillas, garnished with shredded cabbage. The pork was tasty, but a little bland, and super greasy. As you can see, the garnishes are nearly non-existent, except for a small handful of diced cabbage... What? There was nothing else offered... What? No salsa? No cilantro? No guacamole? No picante sauce? No... what? You're right... that was it. But after seeing all of that greasy pork under heat lamps, peering through a very dirty window, I just HAD to eat at this restaurant. My advice to Carnitas El Ruly's would be to check out what the next-door competition is doing, and put your operation up to speed, on the fast-track. The carnitas were priced at the de facto standard rate for Los Algodones of MEX $10.00 each, which is a reasonable price, but the quality of the product pales in comparison to the tacos I enjoyed at the other two restaurants I visited on this Tuesday afternoon, October 19, 2010. The pork was chewy and tasted good, but it was very greasy, there was no salsa, and the only garnish offered was shredded cabbage. I missed guacamole... I love the stuff! Carnitas El Ruly's needs to pay attention to the product that the nearby competition presents, or they will probably be left behind in the Los Algodones dust. Carnitas
