Wednesday, March 21, 2012, I was strolling down Calle B, in Los Algodones, Baja California, in search of tacos, specifically tacos de tripas. Although I had my heart set on tacos de tripas, when I saw the smoke pouring out of the wood-fired grill, on the sidewalk in front of Molcas Taco Shop, and saw the chicken cooking on the grill, I immediately changed my mind and walked up to the counter, and placed an order for two chicken tacos, with everything.
Photo: Check it out: Birria, menudo, tacos de pollo, asada, paastor, lengua, camaron and pescado, but not a word about chicken tacos! Yet, the chef is grilling chicken in a Texas hibachi on the sidewalk? Go figure... only in Los Algodones. Anyway, when I saw him grilling chicken, I couldn't resist ordering a couple of chicken tacos.
Photo: Like most small restaurants in Mexico, Molcas Taco Shop is open to the street, and the furniture is gaudy, plastic tables and chairs. They don't have a menu, instead their offerings are posted by colorful, hand-printed signs, hung from the ceiling and posted on the walls. You figure out what you want, and then you order it and pay for it at the counter. They don't always have everything that's posted, as that's just the way it is.
Photo: The chef grills chicken on a wood-fired grill, on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant. In this part of the world, mesquite is the wood of choice for grilling, on both sides of the border.
Photo: How could you resist not ordering a chicken taco when you see a sight like this?
Photo: Olivia works in the kitchen, chopping chicken into small pieces for my tacos. In Mexico, most kitchens aren't off-limits as they are in the 'states, and most staff members welcome you to take photos.
Photo: Olivia and one of the other girls clown up for my camera. The staff at Molcas Taco Shop were extremely friendly, and loved having their pictures taken. Olivia told me it's rare to have somebody come in and take photos. I told her about my web site, gave her the u.r.l., and she said that she'd check it out...
Photo: Olivia smiles as I take her photo, after she's place two delicious chicken tacos on my table. Like all the staff at the restaurant, this girl was very friendly, and seemed to enjoy having her picture taken.
Photo: What an outstanding meal for $2.50, U.S. dollars! For that small price, I enjoyed a bowl of fresh tortilla chips, red and green salsa, a plate full of salsa, cabbage, cucumber slices, diced red onions and limes, and two of the best chicken tacos that I've ever eaten. Such a bargain!
Photo: The chicken tacos arrived plain, and you were able to add whatever veggies or salsa you wanted. I love it all, so I added a little bit of every thing on my tacos. Molcas Tacos Shop serves delicious tacos! Photo: I like being on both sides of the camera, so I asked Olivia to take my photo, which she gladly did. Although the majority of today's customers were American and Canadian tourists, Molcas Taco Shop serves authentic, Baja-style, Mexican cuisine, served by some of the friendliest people that I've ever met. This place not only serves delicious food, but the staff is absolutely wonderful. Molcas Taco Shop is a gem, and a visit to Los Algodones wouldn't be complete without enjoying a delicious meal at this friendly taco shop. Molcas
