Old town Auburn, CA is one of the typical Sierra Nevada foothill "Gold-Rush-era" downtown, as it's located in a steep, narrow canyon, which makes for a very picturesque setting. For exploring, shopping or just simply enjoying life, old town Auburn will keep you going for a long time. Shopping is hungry work, but there are no worries, as Edelweiss Restaurant 2 is located in Gold Rush Plaza, in historic old town Auburn. You'll enjoy delicious gold country dining every day of the week at this fine restaurant. As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences. Photo: Edelweiss Restaurant 2 is located in historic "Old Town Auburn," in the "Gold Rush Plaza" building, which dates back to 1907. It's been converted into an indoor mall, with many small shops offering mostly locally crafted goods that reflect the legacy of old town. It's a little past 08:00 in the morning, March 20, 2025, and I've arrived at old town to enjoy an amazing breakfast! Photo: The restaurant faces the street and offers a great view of what's happening in "Old Town" Auburn as you enjoy a fine meal. On the outside there is a door posted with the complete menu, along with a white board that advertises daily and weekly specials. The menu door seems to be non-functional, as the door to the restaurant is located inside, to the left of the photo, as you enter the mall. Photo: The dining room isn't fancy at all, since the restaurant would be considered a diner, but it's comfortable and reflects all the things that make Auburn such a wonderful place! Each table is set with a basket of condiments that include salt, pepper, sugar, ketchup, mustard and both Tabasco and Cholula hot sauce. Photo: Jessica is at the kitchen window ready to pick up another order created by talented Chef Roberto. The restaurant is decorated with many photos of historic Auburn, particularly when it comes to gold mining and transportation. Photo: Here are four of the hundreds of lamps, tea pots, cookie jars and other interesting things that decorate the restaurant, and help to make it special. Come for the decor but stay for the food! Photo: Meet super friendly Jessica M., who happens to be the owner of the restaurant, as she served me with a smile. Photo: I toast my gracious hostess Jessica, Edelweiss Restaurant 2, the City of Auburn, and the amazing food served at this fine restaurant! Photo: From the "Breakfasts" section of the menu, I went with "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs." All selections in this section of the menu are offered with several choices of sides, and toast, including English muffins. I went with hash browns and sourdough toast. I added a couple of optional "enhancements..." a side of gravy as an appetizer with a Heineken beer for dessert. This was MY kind of breakfast! The steak was probably around 8-ounces or so in size, pounded flat, seasoned, coated with a mouth-watering batter, and deep fried to a perfect, golden brown. It was a perfect chicken fried steak, as the meat was tender and juicy, which contrasted with the seasoned, crispy batter. The combination of the juicy meat and the deep fried batter is what makes a perfect chicken fried steak, and this steak was perfect. The chef "nailed" the ratio of batter to meat, as it was spot-on, and made for a mouth-watering main entree for my breakfast. As a bonus, both the steak and the hash browns rested on a bed of sausage gravy, to add both a delicious taste and a stunning presentation. As pretty much always, I ordered a side of gravy, which made for amazing dipping to go with the hashbrowns. The sausage gravy was rich, thick and simply delicious, and is almost one of those things that I can't live without. I loved the side of gravy, but before I placed my order, had I known the steak and potatoes rested on gravy, I most likely wouldn't have ordered the extra side. I should have asked, but... oh well... you can never have enough of the delicious breakfast gravy prepared by talented Chef Roberto at Edelweiss Restaurant 2! Speaking of hash browns, the large slab was grilled to a perfect crispy, golden brown on the outside, yet tender and juicy on the inside, which made for a perfect side to the prime rib. The talented chef at Edelweiss 2 knows how to create prefect hash brown potatoes! If you're not in the mood for hashbrowns, country-style potatoes are offered. The gravy they were resting on made them even better. My eggs were fried sunnyside up, as per my order, and were simply delicious. The sourdough toast was buttered, toasted and delicious. Along with the hash browns, it helped me sop up every drop of the delicious gravy. Heineken beer for dessert at 08:00 in the morning? Why not? Cheers! Like every other meal I've enjoyed at Edelweiss Restaurant 2, my breakfast was simply delicious, thanks to the vision of owner Jessica, along with the talents of chefs Roberto and Jay. Quality, quantity and taste came together to make a simply amazing breakfast experience! Photo: My breakfast of "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs" from a slightly different angle. Any way you look at it, this breakfast was simply delicious, and one of the finest chicken fried steaks I've enjoyed during my countless dining adventures in western Placer County. Calling all "foodies" in the gold country who love a superior chicken fried steak... Edelweiss Restaurant 2, located in Auburn has YOUR steak! You'll simply LOVE this wonderful breakfast! Let's go back to Saturday, February 01, 2025, when my friend Dan and I enjoyed an amazing breakfast of "Prime Rib and Eggs," which happens the first Saturday of every month. Photo: It's the first Saturday of the month, and that means it's time to enjoy "Prime Rib and Eggs" at Edelweiss Restaurant 2, located in Auburn, CA. Photo: Edelweiss Restaurant 2 is located in historic "Old Town Auburn," in the "Gold Rush Plaza" building, which dates back to 1907. Today, it's a small indoor mall, and besides the restaurant, there are many small specialty shops. It's Saturday, February 01, 2025, and we've arrived shortly after the 07:00 morning opening time to enjoy one of the finest breakfasts in the gold country. Photo: The dining room is quite compact, and offers a lot of comfortable charm for fine dining. The atmosphere and decor are truly rustic. Photo: It's just a few minutes past opening time, and the restaurant is beginning to fill with mostly local diners. The location is close to busy Interstate 80, so the restaurant sees lots of traffic from the freeway. The brick wall is decorated with lots of old time Auburn photos. Photo: Our server Jessica picks up our orders from the kitchen, as the Chef Roberto looks on. Note the order wheel, which is used to relay orders to the kitchen, just like it was done back in 1965. Photo: Today's specials are listed on a white board, which is hung on the brick wall. There are many period photos decorating the wall, which adds to the ambiance. Photo: Meet super friendly Jessica M., who was our charming hostess today. Jessica was not only our server, but she is now the owner of the restaurant, as she recently purchased it from her dad. We wish her continued success! Photo: I toast to Jessica's recent accomplishment, along with the amazing breakfast that my friend Dan I will be enjoying. Photo: Dan happily shows off his breakfast that he's ready to enjoy. Photo: Dan's breakfast of prime rib, hashbrowns, eggs over easy, along with English muffin and cups of horseradish sauce. The sides of gravy arrived shortly after the photo was taken. Dan and I ordered identical breakfasts, with the exception of the drinks. Photo: Prime rib, hashbrowns, eggs over easy, along with English muffin and cups of horseradish sauce. We enjoyed breakfast gravy on the side, which isn't shown in the photo. I ordered a Heineken beer for refreshment, while Dan ordered coffee. The first Saturday of every month, Edelweiss 2 offers prime rib, served with eggs for breakfast, and they always post the occasion on social media in advance, and give notice to all "foodies" and loyal diners, like your author. If there is any prime rib leftover from breakfast, it's offered for lunch. Just so you know, the price varies, as it's advertised at "Market Rate," but that's not important to us, as this is one of the best breakfasts served on the planet. On this first Saturday in February, 2025, my longtime friend, Dan W. drove up from Merced - a 2-1/2 hour drive - to join me, and enjoy a fine breakfast. Dan has great taste when it comes to food, especially breakfast, we we're both breakfast fanatics. We ordered identical breakfasts, as we're both keyed-in to what an amazing breakfast is all about. The showcase of the meal was a generous cut of prime rib beef, perfectly cooked to medium rare, exactly as we ordered. The cut of meat was very generous and I'm guessing about 16 ounces or so, which made for a filling main dish. The beef was juicy, flavorful and perfectly grilled, and was "fork tender." A knife really wasn't really needed to cut the beef, as it was super moist and tender. Along with the meal, we enjoyed horseradish sauce made for perfect dipping the prime rib into to add an extra "zing" to the beef. We're regulars, and friendly Jessica brought two cups each, as she knows how much we love it with breakfast. Today, as almost always, we went with hash brown potatoes, which are a favorite of both of us. The large slab of hash brown potatoes were grilled to a perfect crispy, golden brown on the outside, yet tender and juicy on the inside, which made for a perfect side to the prime rib. The talented chef at Edelweiss 2 knows how to create prefect hash brown potatoes! If you're not in the mood for hashbrowns, country-style potatoes are offered. When it comes to breakfast, Dan and I are pretty basic, so we ordered eggs fried over easy, which go well with hash brown potatoes. The eggs were perfectly fried, as ordered, and simply delicious. I'm "old school," and I like to mix eggs with the hashbrowns. By the way, you can order your eggs cooked any way you desire. On this Saturday morning, as always, we each ordered a side dish of gravy, which made for amazing dipping to go with the hashbrowns. The sausage gravy was rich, thick and simply delicious, and made for perfect dipping for hash brown potatoes and prime rib. What a great way to enjoy breakfast! We went with English muffin instead of toast, which was toasted and buttered to perfection! The muffin was simply delicious and made for a great way to enjoy the last of the gravy and the meat drippings. Each muffin came with two small packages of jelly which I simply ignored, as I simply like my muffin simply with butter. Dan was happy to utilize some of the jelly! If you're not a fan of English muffins, you can order several varieties of toast, which I often do. But since today was a chilly, rainy day, an English muffin seemed to be a perfect fit. You simply can't find a better breakfast than the "Prime Rib Breakfast," served at this fine restaurant the first Saturday of every month! Photo: I dipped a piece of the tender prime rib into the gravy to enjoy. When it came to dipping, I alternated between the sausage gravy and the horseradish sauce. It's all delicious and makes for fine gold country dining. The prime rib breakfast we enjoyed today delicious! As I mentioned before, my "foodie" friend Dan drove 2-1/2 hours to enjoy this fine breakfast, which attests to how good this breakfast is! Both of us agree the "Prime Rib Breakfasts," served the first Saturday of every month at Edelweiss Restaurant 2, is one of the finest breakfasts that you'll ever enjoy in Placer County. This breakfast will please all who enjoy a superior breakfast! Photo: It's a little past 08:00 in the morning, Saturday, December 07, 2024, and it's the first Saturday of the month, so that means it's time to enjoy prime rib and eggs for breakfast. Photo: Edelweiss Restaurant 2 posts the write-up a couple days before the event on social media, so you know what you'll be enjoying for breakfast. What more could you ask for than a breakfast of prime rib and eggs? Photo: it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas on this Saturday morning in early December, as the Gold Plaza Mall, along with the restaurant is decorated for the holiday season. The menu of Edelweiss Restaurant 2 is posted outside, along with a board highlighting daily specials. On this Saturday morning, prime rib and eggs was on the menu... Photo: One page of the breakfast side of the menu. Edelweiss is serious about breakfast, as the breakfast menu is three pages. Note prime rib is "market value," so bring your wallet. Photo: At a little past 08:00 in the morning, the small dining room is a very busy place, with Auburn locals, and folks all over Placer County who enjoy fine dining. Photo: The walls of the dining room are decorated with photos from early Auburn history. Does this location look familiar to you? Photo: Co-founder of the restaurant - now mostly retired - Steve, takes a break from kitchen duties. He recently sold the restaurant to his oldest daughter Jessica, but he still likes to hang around, and give Chef Roberto a hand in the kitchen. Another friendly server, Ashley, can be seen behind the counter. Photo: I'm chatting with Anna, the friendly hostess, before our meal arrived. Thanks, Dan Weir for the photo. Photo: Ashley, one of the friendly staff grabs a order from the kitchen window to serve to a fellow diner. Edelweiss is "old school" in every way, as when orders are ready, they're placed on the counter and delivered to your table by one of the friendly staff members. Photo: Meet Jessica M., our amazingly friendly hostess, who brought our breakfast to our table with a smile. I've enjoyed her company during nearly every visit to this fine restaurant, as she always treats me, and everybody like family. Recently, Jessica purchased the restaurant from her dad, Steve, who's now mostly retired. Congratulations, Jessica! We look forward to YEARS of good eating! Photo: I raise a glass of Heineken beer to toast Jessica, and the friendly staff at Edelweiss Restaurant 2, as Dan and I get ready to enjoy an amazing breakfast. My friend Dan and I are nearly identical in taste when it comes to food - we're both "foodies" - and today our breakfasts were nearly identical, with the exception of the eggs. I ordered mine fried sunnyside up - which makes for better photos - and Dan ordered his eggs fried over easy. Photo: I'm a happy guy as our breakfasts have arrived, as Dan took my photo. Dan and I ordered identical breakfasts with the exception of the eggs, as I ordered mine fried sunnyside up - which makes for better photos - and Dan ordered his fried over easy. Any way you look at it, the eggs were great! Photo: Dan gives a "thumbs up" to one of the best breakfasts you'll enjoy anywhere in Placer County... or maybe even in the state of California. Photo: From the "Breakfast" side of the menu, Dan and I ordered nearly identical breakfasts. Since today was the first Saturday of the month, and prime rib and eggs were highlighted, we didn't even need to glance at the menu, as we knew what we were after. Prime rib... what else? Today's breakfast was a perfectly grilled slab of prime rib, hash brown potatoes, two fried eggs, a side of sausage gravy, and a toasted, buttered English muffin. The horseradish sauce and the side of gravy made for fine dipping, and the Heineken beer made for a great dessert. The monthly prime rib breakfast Edelweiss Restaurant 2 is a breakfast for "foodies" in western Placer County, and all over the great Sacramento area. This is truly a breakfast event to enjoy! Just ask my friend Dan, as he drove over 140 miles from Merced to enjoy this amazing breakfast. Great gold country dining! We came here for the prime rib... and we got prime rib! I'm talking about a generous slab of prime rib - a pound or so - grilled perfectly to order, in my case... medium rare and taste-bud perfect. Talk about an amazing breakfast entree... a thick 16-oz cut of choice prime rib beef, which was tender, juicy and cooked to order by the talented chef. As always, I went with medium rare, which was my choice, but if medium rare isn't your choice, the talented chef will grill your prime rib exactly the way you choose. As always, the meat was perfectly cooked, tender, flavorful and simply delicious! Not only was it tender and delicious, it was simply beautiful to look at and almost made me afraid to dig into it. Well... almost... Two cups of horseradish sauce for dipping always works with me, and really gets my taste buds into morning overdrive. Oh... I almost forgot to mention the presentation today was simply beautiful, as the slab of beef was medium brown around the edge, but a tender pinkish inside... tender, juicy and delicious! This is a slab of prime rib at it's best in every way... If you really desire to make your morning truly spectacular, cut off a small piece of the juicy prime rib, dip it into the horseradish sauce and enjoy. It's a slice of heaven in Auburn! As in previous visits, my large slab of hash brown potatoes made for the perfect side dish. As in all "old school" diners, the hash browns were golden crispy and crunchy on the outside, and tender, white and juicy on the inside, which made perfect hash brown potatoes. Enjoyed as a side dish to the prime rib, dipped into the eggs, or the gravy, the hash browns were simply perfect. And the gravy... this breakfast is "standalone delicious" but why not go the extra mile and add an optional side of sausage gravy? You won't regret it, as the gravy was thick, creamy, rich, full of flavor and included lots of sausage bits. The gravy could almost make for a standalone side dish, but when you dip hash browns or bits of the muffin into the gravy... it's simply a time to stop and smell the roses... in old town Auburn. My two eggs, fried sunnyside up, as per my order, arrived fried... perfectly. The English muffin was perfectly buttered and toasted, and added to the enjoyment of my delicious breakfast. How often do you fine an English muffin that is perfectly toasted, and buttered on both sides? It happens at Edelweiss Restaurant 2! Dessert... or was it hours d'oeuvres? ... a Heineken beer rounded out the perfect breakfast, and added to the delicious festivities. Cholula and Tabasco hot sauces are on the table, but this breakfast is so delicious that I didn't even think of adding hot sauce, or even salt and pepper. How can you enhance a breakfast that is simply perfect? Just a quick note that the prime rib breakfast is always priced at "market value" so the price varies from month to month. The breakfast is not your "diner priced" bargain breakfast, as it's premium every step of the way, but it's a breakfast that you'll love, and you'll forward to next month to enjoy it again... Photo: A one pound slice of prime rib, cooked "medium rare" to order, by the talented chef, made a centerpiece for this amazing breakfast. "Prime Rib Breakfast" happens the first Saturday of the month, and it's an event to make any Auburn area "foodie" smile. The juicy, pound-size of prime rib beef was perfectly cooked medium rare, as per my order. The chef has talent! You can't find a better breakfast anywhere in the greater Sacramento area on the first Saturday of every month... Edelweiss Restaurant 2 serves amazing "Americana" diner cuisine, for breakfast and lunch, every day of the week. Cuisine is delicious, and the staff is as friendly as it gets. Oh... did I mention that prime rib for breakfast happens on the first Saturday of every month? Dining in historic old town Auburn is always a great adventure, and Edelweiss Restaurant 2 has your breakfast and lunch dining covered, every day of the week.
