I'm not a huge fan of fast food, as I usually prefer something a bit more adventuresome, and unique to the area, but I'd been four wheeling in the desert all day, and I'd just checked into the Bun Boy Motel in Baker, California, and on this early Monday evening, March 16, 2009, I was too tired to go out on the search for an exotic dinner. All I had to do was to open the door of the motel room, and look south, and see Del Taco, in the shadow of the World's Tallest Thermometer. Photo: As I walk back to my motel room with my delicious dinner, I snap a photo of Baker's Del Taco in the mellow, early evening light. Interstate 15 is in the background of the photo. Although Del Taco specializes in tacos, I think that the chain serves a very credible bacon cheeseburger, as the burgers are always grilled, the cheese is always melted, the bacon is cooked to perfection, and the ample garnishes are always crispy and fresh. I'm also a huge fan of Del Taco's fish tacos, as they're among the best served by a national chain, and you can't beat the price. Since I wasn't feeling particularly adventuresome, I thought I'd take the short walk over to Del Taco and order a bacon cheeseburger and a fish taco. Photo: The dining room and order counter are spotlessly clean. Oddly, this restaurant does not accept credit cards, but they have provided a handy A.T.M. to help those who need a Del Taco fix and are short on cash. You walk inside the restaurant, and yep, you're inside a typical Del Taco, complete with those colorful banners hanging from the ceiling advertising wonderful things like Fiesta Packs... the lighted menu is above the order/pick-up counter, and there are numerous employees busily working behind the counter, turning out delicious tacos, burgers, burritos and all of the other fine cuisine that Del Taco has to offer. To the right of the counter there's an A.T.M. machine, which is a good thing, as this Del Taco has a quirk: They only accept cash. All right... That's different from Mainstream Del Taco, U.S.A., along with the fact that this place is clean, shiny, sparkling, squeaky clean, and the employees are friendly. Despite the fact that the restaurant was very busy when I walked in, I was greeted with a cheery, "Good evening Sir. Thanks for stopping by. May I help you?" I'm not kidding, how many times are you actually greeted in a fast food restaurant? Photo: I use existing light to photograph these employees hard at work. I actually snapped them making my dinner, which was good timing on my part. I thanked him for the cheery greeting, and ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a fish taco, to go. Of course I was politely prompted for order enhancements, such as a drink and fries, which I declined; I had plenty of cold brewskies waiting for me back at the motel. After paying for my order and taking a number, I took a seat, took out my camera and notebook, and, well... the rest is in this article. After only a few photos and a few scribbles in my notebook, my number was called, and I picked up my order. Before heading back to the motel, I unwrapped my burger and taco and took a photo of them, as freshly prepared food makes much better photos. Photo: My delicious dinner of a fish taco, and a bacon cheeseburger. Note that the taco uses two corn tortillas, and it includes shredded cabbage, not lettuce, which is the way a fish taco should be dressed. Back at the motel, I powered down a few brewskies, and then it was time to unwrap and enjoy the fruits of my quest. No surprise was found, as Baker Del Taco produces a delicious bacon cheeseburger, and a wonderful fish taco. If you're a Del Taco fan, you'll love the store in Baker, as it's clean, the staff are friendly, and really seem to care about the customer, and the food is great. But don't forget to bring your greenbacks... Del
