Lucky Café is a midtown Sacramento institution that's been serving fine breakfasts and lunches to satisfied patrons for many years. Like many other restaurants, I'd heard people raving about it, and even had driven by a couple of times on weekends to see a line of people waiting to get in. After doing my homework on the web, and determining that Lucky Café, is truly a locally owned and operated, one-of-a-kind operation, I chose Lucky as the location of our club meeting on Friday, August 19, 2011.
Photo: Lucky Café is located along tree-lined 21st Street, in a beautiful section of midtown Sacramento. Its a retro diner both inside and outside - check out the vintage neon sign - and is open for breakfast and lunch only, so that means they're dead serious about breakfast. And since we're the Sacramento Breakfast Club, we're serious about breakfast as well. The only drawback to Lucky Café is the scarcity of parking, and the fact that you have to feed the parking meter. Gerry was very gracious to bring his van that seats six, so we met him at work and carpooled to Lucky.
Photo: This doesn't look like 2011, does it? ... as the decor is 1950's retro, complete with a Formica counter top and vinyl upholstered furniture. I love the ceiling mounted heater/cooler at the rear of the photo, and the 1950's style ceiling fans... I love to dine in a retro restaurant. The only "modern" touches that I can see are a electronic cash register, and a television set, both from the 1990's... This photo was taken from the entrance to the restaurant, and it appears that seating would be a challenge for a group as large as ours as the "dining room" is outfitted with the counter, and only booths for four. No worries, as there is another room that has tables, where our group was seated for breakfast.
Photo: Our friendly server Jennifer brings my breakfast of chicken fried steak to the table, and she truly offers great service with an award-winning smile.
Photo: The menu at Lucky Café features all your breakfast favorites, including one of my favorite choices, chicken fried steak, hash brown potatoes, eggs over easy, and buttered sourdough toast. I found it both unique and attractive the way the gravy was placed in a bowl on the middle of the plate. The chicken fried steak was tender, and the batter was very light, almost like tempura... the breakfast was delicious!
Photo: Today's members of the Sacramento Breakfast Club, from left to right: Dan MacLeod, Bev MacLeod, Eric Rench, David DeMario, Gerry Townsend, Betty Townsend, Robert Kipperman and Glenda Kipperman. The photo gives an idea of the seating offered for larger groups. Notice that the table is a plastic top, folding the table we're sitting on folding chairs... do I sense overflow seating? No problem, as we're happy to sit together as a group. Lucky Café is truly an outstanding place to enjoy a great breakfast! The decor is retro, the service is fast, friendly and efficient, the food is great, the portions are ample, and the prices are reasonable. Lucky Café has certainly earned it's status as a Sacramento breakfast icon. Lucky
