The membership of our club is in a decline, despite the record turnouts of the last several meetings, due to work, specifically the rearrangements that the company is making that has compelled some of our members to accept job transfers to the East Coast.  Many of the latest breakfast meeting reviews have been difficult for me to write, due to the fact that many our recent club meetings have been "the last breakfast" for various club members. Today, Friday, June 25, 2010 was another "last," as today's meeting was the last-breakfast-with-the-club for our current club president, Brad.  Since it was his last meeting, he wanted to go out with a BANG!!  ... and for a BANG!  ... he chose our de facto favorite breakfast restaurant, Charlie's Café.

Photo:  Charlie's Café is as attractive on the outside, as it is on the inside, as this photo shows the landscaped parking lot that's as clean as a parking lot can be.

If you're a regular reader to the adventures of the Sacramento Breakfast Club, you've no doubt read a review or two of Charlie's, as we have a tendency to hold a meeting at Charlie's every couple of months.  Occasionally we call an "emergency" meeting, and the venue is normally Charlie's, as the place meets or exceeds our criteria.  I won't go into detail about Charlie's Café, as it's been covered in previous articles that I've written.  I will say that we keep returning because we love the place, the food and the wonderful people.

Today we were treated to friendly Jeanie (who we've had the pleasure to know for several years) as our server, and she kept the delicious coffee coming until or orders arrived.  Charlie's is open for breakfast and lunch only, so their menu offers a wide array of breakfast favorites, and has something for every taste.  The diversity of breakfast choices was reflected at today's meeting, as Bev ordered bacon and eggs, Sarah ordered pancakes, Nicole and Amber both ordered pancakes topped with whipped cream and fruit, Dan and Brad ordered Charlie's huge breakfast burrito, and Matt, David and I ordered chicken fried steak.

Photo:  No surprise to us that Brad ordered his favorite breakfast from Charlie's:  Giant breakfast burrito, homestyle potatoes, and everything covered with gravy.  If you took an old shoe and covered it with Charlie's delicious sausage gravy, Brad would love it.  Have you ever eaten a breakfast burrito covered with gravy, rather than salsa?  Brad talked me into ordering one during a previous visit, and it's weird, but it's good.  Sarah seems to think it's weird too...

Charlie's food is simply delicious.  Charlie is proud to point out that everything is made in-house using fresh ingredients.  Unlike many other restaurants, you won't find any heat lamps, as the food is delivered hot and fresh from the kitchen, and you won't find any commercial food trucks lurking in the parking lot, as Charlie's doesn't serve "institutional" food like many chain restaurants do.  Charlie is owned and operated by Charlie and Dave Rolban, who are locals, and employ locals, and cater to the taste of Sacramento-area locals.  We just can't say enough about how much we love this restaurant, but we love the restaurant for the following reasons:

*  Outstanding, fresh, attractive, perfectly-cooked breakfasts

*  Diverse menu selection

*  Ample portions which represent a very good value

*  Some of the friendliest people in the business - they know us and welcome us and treat us like family

Those are only a few of the many reasons why we love Charlie's Café.  Simply stated, it's one of the best restaurants in town, and has over the years remained our favorite place to enjoy a wonderful breakfast.

Photo:  Amber, to the left of the photo, poses with her chocolate covered pancake, while Nicole, to the right, chose the more health route of a strawberry and whipped cream pancake.  Mom and dad look on, and smile for the camera.  I think Matt is smiling because he's just about ready to dig into his chicken fried steak.  The girls asked me to snap their photo, with their pancakes on the table in front of them, and I happily agreed.

Today was the day where we said goodbye to long time member Brad Holther, who got caught up in a personnel rearrangement, and accepted a job transfer to the east coast.  He will truly be missed, as not only did he rise through the ranks to become the club president, but he was the instigator and the butt of most of the jokes, so his wit, wisdom, and insight into all things associated with breakfast will be missed.

As I was taking photos, Nicole and Amber both asked me to snap their photos of each of them, seated at the table with their fruity pancakes.  Of course I obliged, as when anybody requests that I take their photo, I'm only too happy to do so, and I promised the girls that I'd do one better, and publish a photo of each of them on the web.  I guess it's sort of like the feeling that you get the first time you see your name printed in the phone book.  Oooops, maybe I'm dating myself...

Photo:  My delicious breakfast of three eggs over easy, chicken fried steak, covered with gravy, homestyle potatoes, with chopped onions and peppers, biscuits and gravy, and a cup of Charlie's delicious coffee.  I must have enjoyed 10 cups of coffee, as the coffee just kept on comin'.  Charlie's Café serves a delicious chicken fried steak.

If you haven't paid Charlie's a visit, you owe it to yourself.  You'll be treated to one of the best breakfasts in town, and you'll enjoy some of the friendliest service in the greater Sacramento area.  The Sacramento Breakfast Club proudly endorses Charlie's Café, and bestows upon them the Breakfast Medal of Honor.
