Are you passing through Santa Rosa, New Mexico, and you're in the mood for an authentic Route 66 diner, serving Mexican, and retro diner cuisine?  Are you a fan of delicious food, black and white checkered floors, and retro decor? Route 66 Restaurant, located along historic Route 66 - renamed Will Rogers Blvd. - will be your kind of restaurant.

As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences.

Photo:  It's a few minutes before 5:00 in the afternoon on Thursday, September 06, 2018, and I've found my way to Route 66 Restaurant, located on historic Route 66, in Santa Rosa, New Mexico.  After looking at photos posted online, I notice the round sign that used to read "66" has fallen into a state of disrepair.

Photo:  The view of the dining room, as you enter the restaurant, is "classic Route 66," complete with the checkered floor, the jukebox and a few vintage photos and posters.  Note the "R-O-U-T-E-6-6" lettered on the backs of the counter stools!  That's a nice touch...  The very clean dining room definitely has the look and "feel" of a vintage diner.

To add to the atmosphere, classic country music was playing in the background.

Photo:  Since is was late afternoon, the restaurant presented the dinner menu.  This is the "American" side of the menu, Mexican offerings are on the other side.  Everything looked good, but I decided to go with a hamburger and fries.

Photo:  After placing my order of a burger and fries, I walked to the rear of the dining room to check it out, and to take another photo.  As the photo shows, besides the counter where I sat, the furniture is mostly booths, but there are a few tables which cater to large groups.  At 5:00 on this Thursday afternoon, the restaurant was sparsely seated.

Photo:  I was still adding notes to a text file on my phone - so I could remember details three weeks later when I got around to publishing this article - when my Hamburger and Fries arrived, delivered to my by my server, Esther.  My meal arrived about 10 minutes after I placed my order, and that's lightning FAST service for such a lovely meal.

Photo:  Thanks, Esther, for taking my photo, as I prepare to enjoy an amazing Route 66 Restaurant burger and fries.

Photo:  My dinner of a Hamburger and Fries.  The burger started with a 1/4 beef patty, cooked medium, placed on a sesame seed bun, garnished with sliced lettuce, tomato and dill pickle.  The burger arrived without any condiments, and the only condiment I added was a few squirts of mustard.  This is definitely an "old school" burger and was absolutely delicious.  Cheese could have been added for only $.50, but all I wanted was a burger!

The menu gives you the choice between chips or fries, and naturally I chose fries.  The fries were perfectly cooked; golden brown on the outside and chewy on the inside, and were neither salty or oily.  They were so great that I refrained from using ketchup!  An amazing dinner... but look closely at the next photo.

Photo:  The menu lists a burger and fries for $7.99, which is about what you'd expect to pay for such a great meal. When the check arrived, I noted that I'd only been charged $5.25 plus tax for the meal.  Since I'm an honest guy, when it came time to "pony up" for the check, I asked Ester twice if this was correct, and she assured me it was.  So, I paid the tab, gave her a very generous tip, and walked out, noting that I'd just paid a 1998 price for a 2018 burger.

The food is delicious, the portion is "just right," the atmosphere is pure "Route 66," the service is great, and the price of an amazing burger and fries... am I living in 1998, or 2018? ... is lower than I could ever imagine.  At Route 66 Restaurant, you'll not only enjoy great food, but you'll enjoy a great retro diner experience.
