Oh do I love bratwurst!  Some bratwurst is beef, and some is pork, and I really don't care as I love it all.  Here's a really easy way to grill bratwurst and potatoes, side-by-side on the grill, which will provide enough meat and potatoes for the entire family dinner.

Special tools: grill, indoor or outdoor, aluminum foil
Preparation time:  About 5 minutes
Cooking time:  About 60 minutes, see text
Yield:  6 servings

1 package, pork bratwurst sausage, six links to a package
6 medium or large red potatoes
Canadian Steak Seasoning, as needed
Olive oil, as needed
Wood chips, hickory, soaked in water at least 24 hours
Non-stick grilling spray, such as PAM, as needed

At least 24 hours before you plan to grill, or better yet a couple of days, place hickory chips in a bucket of water to soak.  The more waterlogged the chips are, the more smoke they will produce.

Wash potatoes and pat dry.  Cut potato in half, lengthwise.  Rub olive oil all over potato halves, and sprinkle cut side of potato with Canadian Steak Seasoning, to taste. Set aside.

Left:  Grilled bratwurst, up-close and personal.  Note the attractive grill marks.  Right:  The potato halves have been grilled, cut-side down, and now are grilling over high heat, to sear the skin side.

Light grill.  If you have a gas grill, adjust to high heat.  As grill is heating, thoroughly clean grilling surface with grill brush, then spray non-stick grilling spray on grill surface.  Caution:  Watch for flare-ups!

When grill has reached high temperature, and wood chips begin to smoke, place potatoes, cut side down on the grill surface.  Place bratwurst on grill.  Cook bratwurst on grill, over high heat, for about 4 minutes, or until grill marks appear.  Flip bratwurst over; grilled side up.

Grill marks should appear on potatoes after 6 or seven minutes.  After grill marks have appeared on cut side of potato, flip over.

By now, grill marks should have appeared on the bratwurst.  Remove from heat, wrap loosely in aluminum foil and reserve.

Grill marks should appear on skin side of potato after another 6 minutes or so.  When grill marks appear, remove potatoes from heat, and wrap loosely in aluminum foil.

Place aluminum foil wrapped packages of bratwurst and potatoes on grill, and reduce heat to 350 degrees, are. Bake over indirect heat for about 45 minutes.

Photo:  This is an actual dinner that I took to work one night.  To the left, I have cooked corn and broccoli, covered with my smoky ranchero sauce; click on the hyperlink for the recipe.  To the right, I have cut-up bratwurst and baked potatoes.  Gourmet food at work, on the night shift.  It doesn't get much better than this at work.

Remove from grill and serve while hot.  Serve cooked vegetables on the side, or maybe with a tossed green salad for a complete meal.
