Taqueria Bahia is a small roadside restaurant, located on the unnamed main street of Bahia de Los Angeles, and it's located only a short block south of Motel Las Hamacas, where I enjoyed a pleasant evening in early October, of 2007.  The restaurant is operated by tow very friendly women, Guillermina and Veronica, and features a limited number of menu choices, all placed from a hand-printed menu, posted at the front of the restaurant.  The restaurant is only open during evening hours, which is around 5 in the afternoon, to 11 at night, local time, as Guillermina and Veronica have other issues, and family matters to attend to, during more traditional hours.

Photo:  Since I dined at night, I took a night photo of Taqueria Bahia, and the photo illustrates the modest kitchen, and the outdoor dining facilities that the restaurant has to offer.

By the time I discovered Taqueria Bahia, located only a block from my motel room, it was nearly dark, and I'd already purchased a bargain-priced bottle of tequila from the neighborhood store, and had enjoyed some of its contents, yet I was in the mood for a delicious fish taco.  The sun had set, over the beautiful Sea of Cortez, yet I was still in the mood for a delicious fish taco when I spotted Taqueria Bahia, just a block from my motel room, and their hand-printed menu advertised such delights as, fish tacos, shrimp tacos, carne asada tacos, tostados, tortas, which included their "famous" ham and cheese torta.  I was drawn to Taqueria Bahia like a moth to a flame, especially when I walked up to the restaurant and was greeted by the friendly owner, Guillermina Arce, and her lovely helper, Veronica.

Photo: Guillermina Smith Acre, owner and operator of Taqueria Bahia, poses to the left of the photo, while smiling and friendly helper Veronica produces a pan of fresh salsa cruda that she has just made.  I sent Guillermina copies of some of the photos that I took of her restaurant, and a few other photos of Bahia de Los Angeles.

You can use many adjectives to describe Taqueria Bahia, but the adjective, fancy, just doesn't come to mind, as the restaurant is plain and unpretentious, at best.  The restaurant's foundation is a plain, concrete slab, set next to the unnamed main street in town, facing the azure blue Sea of Cortez.  It's staffed by two lovely women, but the restaurant keeps variable hours, due to the schedules of Guillermina and Veronica who own and work the restaurant, their families, the weather, and the availability of fish, beef and tortillas, which can be subject to change in Bahia de Los Angeles, under many conditions.

By the time I made my way to Taqueria Bahia, it was nearly dark, as it was near 7 in the evening, on October 3, 2007.  I walked up to the counter, and was greeted by friendly Guillermina, who actually owns and operates the restaurant.  I checked out their hand-printed, limited menu, posted on the outside wall, next to the order counter, and I ordered two fish tacos, con todo,  for the small price of MEX $20.00, which is less than two U.S. greenbacks.  How can you resist delicious tacos at such a small price?  At Taqueria Bahia, when you order a fish taco "con todo," that means they put on all of the trimmings after they cook the taco; signed, sealed and delivered.  Actually, I was almost persuaded by their advertised ham and cheese torta, as I've never sampled such a creation, but I was in Bahia de Los Angeles, and in the mood for fish tacos...

Photo:  Veronica cooks my meal on their propane-fired griddle, as she engages me in friendly conversation, naturally, in Spanish.

Since Guillermina owns and operates the place, she assumes the roll of "boss lady, " as acting in the role of "la patron," she seemed content to take my order, chat with me, and take my money, as Veronica performed the kitchen chores.  You have these perks, when you're the "boss lady" of a Mexican restaurant, in Mexico.

Photo:  How can I help not to take another photo of a beautiful woman, as she smiles for my digital camera? Veronica is in the process of cooking carne asada, for another customer, but as I flirted with her, I couldn't resist another photo.

As I was chatting with Guillermina, I noticed that Veronica took a couple of pieces of battered fish out of the refrigerator, and placed the pieces on the propane-fired griddle of the restaurant, which was already hot, as it had already been in use, since I wasn't the first customer of the day.  The battered fish filles are long and narrow, and they're shaped to fit a medium-sized corn tortilla.  After the fish cooked for a couple of minutes on the griddle, she turned the fish over with a spatula, and reached into the refrigerator, and grabbed a couple of medium-sized corn tortillas, which she placed on the griddle.  After only 30 seconds, she flipped the tortillas over, as they started to bubble...

Photo:  My delicious order of two fish tacos, with all of the condiments.  I highly recommend Taqueria Bahia for delicious fish tacos!

I couldn't but to notice that all of Veronica's actions, as she was performing the actual cooking chores, seemed to be timed so the tortillas, and the battered fish would be ready at the same time, and I wasn't disappointed, as my delicious fish tacos were ready for me to eat, in only a few minutes.  Veronica seems able to chat and cook at the same time, as while she was preparing my delicious fish tacos, I was able to keep up a running conversation with her, in Spanish, or course, as Spanish is the language of Mexico, and you really need at least a basic understanding of Spanish, if you're going to visit Bahia de Los Angeles, as very little English is spoken.

I highly recommend Taqueria Bahia, as not only do they serve delicious tacos, at very reasonable prices, but staff members Guillermina and Veronica are two of the friendliest women I've ever had the pleasure to meet, and they'll treat you like family when you visit the restaurant.  I absolutely LOVE Taqueria Bahia, and I know you will too!
