Taqueria Sonora is located in downtown Sonora, CA and serves fine Mexican cuisine every day of the week. For the 55th Annual Columbia Father's Day Fly-In, located in nearby Columbia, the restaurant set up a pop-up booth and served three varieties of street tacos, quesadillas, soft drinks, along with all of your favorite condiments, and corn tortilla chips. As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences. Photo: It's late Saturday morning, July 15, 2024, and I've arrive at Taqueria Sonora, at the 55th Annual Columbia Father's Day Fly-in, at Columbia, CA. Taqueria Sonora operates a full-service restaurant in downtown Sonora and had set up this pop-up restaurant for today's event. Photo: The chef gives me a friendly smile as he grills small corn tortillas on the propane griddle. Photo: The menu was short and simple, and offered "Street Tacos," drinks and "Quesadillas." Photo: My plate of two "Street Tacos" was served to me shortly after I paid for my order. Note the generous helping of delicious carne asada. Now it was time to visit the salsa and chip bar in the back of the restaurant. Photo: I'm a happy guy, as I'm going to enjoy two delicious tacos at the fly-in, thanks to Taqueria Sonora. I love their slogan, "Experience the Difference," which makes for great gold country dining! Photo: The chips and salsa bar was "sit-down restaurant quality," as it offered a wide array of salsa, condiments, along with a box of fresh corn tortilla chips. This was an all-you-can-eat event, so I felt free to load up on the chips and condiments. It was all kept cool thanks to the many bags of ice. Note my two tacos, ready to be dressed out. I made sure I left some room at the side for a helping or two of chips and salsa. So delicious! Photo: I went with two "Street Tacos" and my choice of protein was carne asada. I took a trip to the chips and salsa bar, and really dressed out my tacos, in style, and added a side of corn chips and salsa. Why are these called "street tacos?" Because they are nearly identical to tacos sold on the streets of every village, town and city in Mexico. My choice of meat was carne asada and each taco contained a very generous helping of juicy, marinated, chopped and thinly sliced grilled carne asada meat, which truly got the tacos going. The carne asada was placed on top of two small, perfectly grilled corn tortillas, each the size of a DVD, which made the foundation for a couple of great tacos. The tacos were "bare of condiments," as the condiment and chip bar was behind the restaurant. I found the salsa and chip bar to be amazing well-stocked, with a wide selection of goodies, all kept fresh and cold thanks to many bags of ice. The selection of chips and condiments rivaled the selection in a sit-down restaurant! I love to heap as much in the way of condiments on my tacos as I can, and today was no exception. From the plentiful condiment bar, I added chopped cilantro, pico de gallo, avocado crema, diced white onion, along with a sliced, pickled jalapeno pepper. One bite into my first taco truly reminded me of the many "street tacos" I've enjoyed during my many travels to Mexico. The carne asada meat was perfectly grilled, tender, juicy and bursting with flavor. The condiments were fresh, delicious and enhanced the fine tacos I enjoyed for an early lunch. Each taco held together well, thanks to the two corn tortillas, which is the way "street tacos" are made on the streets of Mexico. The corn tortilla chips were fresh, warm and made for a perfect side to the amazing tacos. I added salsa rojo on the side for dipping. Muy sabroso! The tacos were simply delicious, authentic, Mexican "street tacos" which made for a delightful beginning to an enjoyable day at the 55th Annual Columbia Father's Day Fly-in, held at the Columbia, CA airport. Taqueria Sonora sets up their pop-up restaurant at many area events, so if you don't want to hit their restaurant, located in downtown Sonora, you can enjoy their fine cuisine at many local Tuloumne County events. The tacos were simply delicious, the service was fast and friendly, and the chip and salsa bar was spectacular. When you're in the mood for a truly authentic and delicious Mexican street taco, visit Taqueria Sonora at their restaurant in downtown Sonora, or catch their pop-up restaurant at various local events.
