There's nothing that I love more than to dine in a unique, mom and pop restaurant in a small mountain town, that caters to the taste of locals, tourists and hikers, who trek the Pacific Crest Trail. I'm talking about Red Moose Cafe, located in beautiful Sierra City, CA. As with all of reviews that I publish, I have no affiliation with the restaurant reviewed, and there is no monetary gain on my part, as I am simply a person who likes to eat, and I love to write-up, and publish my dining experiences. Photo: Red Moose Cafe, located in Sierra City, CA has just opened at 08:00 in the morning, Saturday, September 14, 2024, and I'm looking forward to an amazing breakfast. Sierra City, with a population of around 250, is located in Sierra County, at the 4000 foot elevation, and is at the northern end of the gold country, also known as the "Mother Lode." Fine Gold Country Dining any way you look at it! Photo: The wide veranda welcomes all tourists visiting Sierra County, and the northern end of California's gold country, along with hikers from the nearby Pacific Crest Trail. The restaurant is very popular with trail hikers, and sees several each day during hiking season. Photo: As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the large counter and the many stools that cater to locals all over Sierra County. Hikers trekking the Pacific Crest Trail make the 2-mile diversion into Sierra City to enjoy the fine mountain cuisine, after weeks of enduring... shall we say ... trail food? The owner of the restaurant, Steve, told me that during the summer months, the restaurant hosts several hikers each day. Hikers, truckers and 5th wheelers know their food, and the great places to dine. Photo: On this Saturday morning, the dining room was a busy place, packed with Sierra County locals. Everybody seemed to know everybody else, as Red Moose Cafe makes for the perfect gathering spot for locals. Photo: Steve, the owner of the restaurant, takes an order from two diners, who seemed to be visitors. Sierra City is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and offers beautiful mountain scenery and countless ways to enjoy the outdoors, for the outdoor enthusiast. Photo: The restaurant offers a beautiful patio for outdoor dining, where friendly and well-behaved dogs are welcome. I truly prefer to dine outside, but on this 50-degree morning, dining indoors seemed like a better choice. Photo: The sign says it all, as if you need to remind yourself that you're in Sierra City... Photo: The breakfast menu offers everything a breakfast lover could ask for, including a selection geared to hungry hikers. I almost went that route... but I settled for the "Mega Moose." Photo: Red Moose Cafe is a favorite of the area locals and many of them hang their coffee mug on the wall in the dining room. Photo: Meet Tammy, my friendly server, who brought my breakfast to me with a smile. She and the rest of the staff treated me like family. Photo: I'm a happy diner, as I'm ready to enjoy a delicious "Mega Moose" breakfast at Red Moose Cafe. I was very modest for breakfast, as I simply ordered a complimentary glass of ice water as my choice of beverage. The choice of my drink was quite obvious, as I had to drive home... Photo: "From the Coop" section of the breakfast menu, I went with "Mega Moose," as I was in the mood for a large, mountain breakfast. The menu describes this amazing breakfast as, "Two eggs, two premium bacon, and two sausage links served with potatoes or cottage cheese and your choice of toast or English muffin." Surprise! ... country style or hash brown potatoes were offered, so I went with hash browns. As my de facto standard choice, I opted for sourdough toast. This amazing breakfast showcases two pieces of thick bacon, and two juicy links of sausage, grilled perfectly and placed on the platter with care and lots of love. The slab of hash brown potatoes were perfectly grilled to crispy medium golden brown on the outside, white, tender and juicy on the inside. Perfect hash browns! As per my order, the two eggs arrived sunnyside up, perfectly cooked, and made for great dipping with the hash browns. My slice of sourdough toast was toasted ... no surprise, buttered, and made for the prefect thing to scoop up every bit of goodness from the plate. No wonder Red Moose Cafe is a favorite of locals, and hikers who divert from the Pacific Crest Trail to relax, and enjoy a superior breakfast! My breakfast was simply amazing, and it was so delicious that I didn't bother adding any condiments for taste enhancement - including salt or pepper - as my breakfast was simply THAT GOOD! Steve, Tammy and the friendly staff treated me like a rock star, which added to the amazing breakfast that I enjoyed at this fine restaurant. Such a delicious breakfast, served in a rustic cafe, but super friendly staff! When you're exploring beautiful Sierra County, at the northern end of the gold country, or you're taking a break from hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, you owe it to yourself to enjoy fine mountain cuisine at Red Moose Cafe. Steve, Tammy and the rest of the friendly staff will serve you outstanding food, and treat you like a rock star. Cheers! Red Moose Cafe Copyright(c) 2024 eRench Productions. All rights reserved.
