Winton, California is a seldom-visited unincorporated town, and is definitely not a Merced-area dining destination, as the town is small, and it only has a few restaurants.  No worries, as it includes Los Serranos Hot Lunch, located at the corner of Winton Way and Santa Fe Ave.  Outstanding tacos and tortas, OH MY!

Photo:  The kitchen of Los Serranos Hot Lunch is located in a taco truck, but it's parked at a semi-perminent location that includes a huge awning for shade, picnic tables and trash cans.  On this Friday morning at around 10:00, July 31, 2015, I basically "opened up" the restaurant, as I was their first customer of the day.  If you're a railfan, and especially if you like B.N.S.F., you'll love this Mexican restaurant, as it's located near the busy railroad line.  Note the manifest freight train in the rear of the photo.  Does it get any better than to enjoy delicious Mexican food, under a canopy, and watch trains?  Life is good at Los Serranos...

Photo:  The menu is, shall we say, quite compact.  Tacos, tortas, quesadillas, burritos and nachos make up the menu, and the drinks are quite basic.  Check out the prices, as they are very reasonable.

Photo:  Today, Los Serranos had two charming ladies working the truck.  Since I was the first customer of the day, they were just ramping up, but by the time I finished my delicious meal, they were quite busy, with lots of hungry locals.  I love dining at taco trucks!  I didn't manage to get this lovely lady's name... Shame on me.  Like most taco trucks, you order, pay, and when your order is ready, they'll call you my name, or by what you ordered.  My order was ready in about 10 minutes, which was great.  Actually, I didn't really care, as I was not in a hurry, as I was just sipping my Jarritos Tamarind as I waited for my order, and watched a freight train, and a passenger train roll by on the nearby railroad line.

Photo:  After I received my order, I asked the gal to snap my photo, which she did, and I thanked her.  Yes, that's my truck in the background, and I had just returned from a great camping trip at Jerseydale, with family and friends.

Photo:  I was HUNGRY, to say the least, so I ordered a carne asada torta, along with a carne asada taco, with everything on it, "con todo" as they say it in Spanish.  For my drink, I ordered a Jarritos "Tamarind" which is definitely off the radar if you're not a fan of Mexican food.  The total cost of this delicious meal, including the drink, came to only $8.00, which was a bargain.

Photo:  My carne asada torta - $5.00 - which included EVERYTHING!  I even got a very HOT-HOT grilled jalapeno pepper on the side.  This torta weighed nearly a pound, and if I had known it was so HUGE, I wouldn't have ordered the taco on the side.  All I can say is this was one, big and totally delicious torta!

Photo:  Ah yes, a close-up photo of the best carne asada taco that you can imagine, served on two toasted corn tortillas, and garnished with everything.  At $1.50, you can't beat this wonderful taco.

When you're visiting Winton, in rural Merced County, and you're interested in delicious Mexican food, at a very reasonable price, look no further than Los Serranos Hot Lunch.
