I know you think that I'm crazy for publishing a recipe for an Italian hot dog, and maybe I am.  Italy might be known for pizza, lasagna and spaghetti, but is Italian cusine famous for hot dogs?  I think so... Maybe?  Well, sort of...

Special tools:  Grill, indoor, outdoor, charcoal, gas, electric; any grill will work
Preparation time:  About 5 minutes
Cooking time:  About 8 minutes
Yield:  1 hot dog; recipe easily doubled, quadrupled, etc.; do the math...

1 Italian sausage, mild or hot, your taste dictates...
1 hot dog bun
2 tablespoons diced, white onions, feel free to substitute any variety of onion
1 tablespoon diced jalapeno pepper
1 tablespoon diced Roma tomato, preferable very fresh and firm
Mustard, mayonnaise, olive oil

Heat grill to operating temperature.  Over direct, high heat, place Italian sausage on grill.  While sausage is cooking, dice onion, pepper and tomato.  Cook sausage over high heat for about 5 minutes, making sure grill marks appear.  Turn over and cook for another 3 minutes, making sure grill marks appear.  Remove sausage from grill and reserve.

Left:  Italian sausages are grilling on my indoor grill.  Notice the grill marks.  Right:  Italian sausage is place on a toasted hot dog bun, with lots of diced veggies, mustard and mayonnaise, for a great meal.

Open hot dog bun and place on grill, open side down, and toast for about 30 seconds, or until grill marks appear. Remove from grill.  Place bun on plate and lighly place olive oil on both sides of bun.  Add mustard and mayonnaise to taste.  Add diced onion, jalapeno pepper and tomato.  Place sausage on bun and serve immediately.

I know that Italy has never been known for hot dogs, and I've morphed two cultures into this dish, but an Italian hot dog makes a tasty lunch, or for that matter, an entire meal.  Think of it this way:  Coney Island is known for its hot dogs, and Brooklyn is known for its Mafia-types.  You combine the best of both worlds and what do you get? An Italian hot dog, of course!
